Winter Recess
The second quarter/first semester will end, and Winter Recess will begin at the end of the school day on Friday, Dec. 20. All classes will resume on Tuesday, January 7. Report cards will be available in the Skyward Parent Portal on Friday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m.

Duneland School Board Recognitions
The following students and staff members were recognized by the Duneland School Board members at their Monday, December 2 meeting.

Congratulations to the winners of the Duneland School Corporation 2024 Winter Card Contest for grades K-8. A winning card design was selected from the elementary, intermediate and middle school level submissions.
The winning card designs from each level will be used as the 2024 DSC holiday cards.
2024 Winter Card Winners are:
ELEMENTARY LEVEL

Each of the winners received 10 copies of their cards and art supplies compliments of Duneland School Corporation; and a gift certificate compliments of the Chesterton Art Center. Several holiday cards are on display through the month of December in the lobby at the Duneland Administration Center, 601 W Morgan Avenue, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
CHS Girls’ Volleyball - Sectional Champion
Congratulations to the Chesterton High School Girls’ Volleyball team on winning the Sectional Championship. Team members include: Delaney Barrett, Elaina Markwart, Ryleigh Connor, Madison Gilliam, Cassie Lange, Peyton Ello, Luca Bombacino, Marissade Roe, Tenley Davis, Brooke Williams, Reese Dilbeck, Abigail Parrish, Taylor Moore and Peyton Moskalick. Coaches are Lindsay Nibert, Kevin Labaj, Cathy Dilbeck, Michael Fisher, Kodi Heston and Elizabeth Weglowski
CHS Trojan Guard State Runners Up
Congratulations to the Chesterton High School Trojan Guard for an exciting season that resulted in many accolades and records for the marching band. Trojan Guard out-performed 14 of the top scholastic bands in the state to capture a 2nd place finish at the Indiana State School Music Association’s (ISSMA) Scholastic State Finals on October 19th. This placement matches last season’s 2nd place runner-up standing, matching the highest placement in ten seasons. The Trojan Guard’s final score was also exemplary, the highest point total the band has received in the past 20 seasons.

Trojan Learning Center
The following Trojan Learning Center students and staff members were recognized by the Duneland School Board members at their Monday, December 2 meeting. During the 2024-25 school year, each school will be celebrating and honoring the work of its students and staff through recognition aligned to the three tag words identified in the Strategic Plan: Inspire, Engage, and Empower.
EMPOWER Award
The EMPOWER award is based on Trojans who demonstrate exemplary growth and/or achievement. This is demonstrated by resilience and excellence in the pursuit of academic success.
Duneland preschool students Scarlett Bogaski, Dahlia Kirk, and Reid Rowsell were awarded with the EMPOWER Award.
Scarlett Bogaski has shown remarkable growth in her behavior and social skills since starting preschool. She exemplifies resilience and leadership, often mentoring her classmates and serving as a role model. Recently, she demonstrated her kindness and empathy by not going to outside recess to support a friend during a difficult transition to another teacher.
Dahlia Kirk began preschool at the age of three and has grown significantly over her two years in the program. Dahlia earned this award for her outstanding academic progress, leadership, and consistent ability to set a positive example for her peers. Her willingness to help classmates and demonstrate expected behaviors truly embodies the spirit of empowerment.
Reid Rowsell has been in preschool for almost one year and has demonstrated exceptional perseverance. Reid has made notable growth in tackling challenges, following directions, and embracing leadership opportunities. His kindness and determination have earned him this recognition.
Also, receiving Empower awards were students, Olivia Deem and Ty Johnson.Olivia, a CHS senior at the RISE Academy, embodies the spirit of growth through her resilience and determination. Since joining the program during her junior year, Olivia has overcome significant obstacles while remaining steadfast in her goals. This school year, she has empowered herself and others by serving as an example of what is possible through hard work and perseverance. On track to graduate mid-term, Olivia continues to inspire those around her with her unwavering commitment to success.
Ty, an 11th-grade student attending Northwest Indiana Online School since it opened, has demonstrated growth and achievement His dedication to staying on pace, completing assignments with high marks, and offering guidance to new students highlights his commitment to both personal success and the success of his peers. Ty’s ability to empower himself and others demonstrates the true essence of this award.
Developmental Preschool Team
INSPIRE Award
The Developmental Preschool Paraprofessionals Team of Rachel Byrnside, McKenna Guernsey, Kendall Rhinehart, Ari Schnarr, and Sherry Shi were honored with the Inspire Award exemplifing leadership through unwavering positivity, adaptability, and commitment to the success of the students they serve.
Every school day, this team arrives with enthusiasm and a readiness to face whatever challenges the day may bring. They prioritize student safety above all else, seamlessly collaborating to ensure the well-being of every child, including those requiring medical interventions. Their ability to work together like clockwork not only safeguards the individual student but also maintains a safe and stable environment for the entire classroom.
In addition to their vigilance, they engage in meaningful daily interactions with the students; supporting restroom needs, modeling positive behaviors, and helping students navigate their developmental journey. Even in the absence of the classroom teacher, this exceptional team ensures that routines and expectations remain consistent, allowing the classroom to run smoothly without missing a beat. Their dedication, compassion, and teamwork make them true leaders in our school community and serves as a shining example of an exceptional mindset.
INSPIRE Award
Also, being recognized with an INSPIRE Award are Sara Lorenz and Gabby McKee-Lewis for their exceptional contributions as Success Coaches for the Online School and the Alternative Education Program, respectively.
Sara has taken a leadership role in coaching, assisting, problem-solving, and encouraging students enrolled in Northwest Indiana Online School. She provides both online and in-person support to students and their families, going above and beyond to ensure their success. Sara consistently demonstrates initiative by seeking out resources for students who may be struggling academically, and she is always willing to assist in any capacity at the Learning Center.
Gabby has excelled in her leadership role as a mentor for students at the Alternative Education Academy. Her unwavering commitment to student success, even in challenging situations, is evident in her work. Gabby offers students a listening ear, practical guidance, and real-world examples to inspire them as they prepare for life after high school. She also serves as a dependable and invaluable support to the Alt Ed Lead Teacher, ensuring the program runs smoothly and effectively.
In addition, Administrative Assistant Michelle Palko is also being awarded with the INSPIRE Award for her extraordinary contributions and unwavering dedication to the Trojan Learning Center. Often described as "the glue that holds everything together," she seamlessly balances a wide array of responsibilities, embodying the mindsets, behaviors, and skills essential for success.
A true multitasker, she takes initiative in every task, whether it’s fixing a printer, solving problems, or finding the answers to even the most obscure questions. Her wealth of knowledge about the inner workings of The HUB, Preschool, Northwest Indiana Online School, Alternative Education, and the school corporation—combined with her resourcefulness to locate solutions—makes her indispensable. Always approachable, she fosters a welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors alike.
We are incredibly fortunate to have someone who is not only a hardworking problem solver but also a vital presence in the Trojan Learning Center. As the children call her, “Miss Michelle’s dedication, skillset and positive mindset truly embody the essence of the INSPIRE Award.
ENGAGE Award
Allison Susdorf was recognized with the ENGAGE Award.
As the Birth-to-School Instructional Lead for the Early Learning HUB, Allison has demonstrated her remarkable ability to connect with children and families while creating meaningful opportunities for engagement and learning. Since stepping into her role in the 2023-2024 school year, she has expanded programming to include a variety of new offerings for the community. From hosting a full class of Music and Movement, to leading outdoor adventures with Young Explorers, and introducing strategies to help children relax and self-regulate, Allison has significantly enhanced the HUB's offerings. Her efforts have led to a steady increase in weekly attendance.
Allison listens to participants to identify new opportunities, such as expanding Open Gym, ensuring the needs of families are always at the forefront. Beyond her work at the HUB, she represented DSC at the YMCA’s Dancing Like the Stars event, where she won the Shining Star Award for raising the most money, further showcasing her dedication to community involvement.
Launching the virtual series HUB at Home, Allison now provides online recordings of her Kinder Kids class and bedtime story readings, extending her reach to families beyond the classroom.
DSC is fortunate to have Allison as our hometown celebrity, with everything she does focused on supporting children, strengthening the community, and staying involved with her own children’s activities. Her ability to engage and inspire makes her a deserving recipient of the ENGAGE Award.
Honoring McGinty for Service to School Board
Monday marked the last meeting of a four-year term for School Board member, Tim McGinty. Tim served the Duneland Schools in many ways…as a student, teacher, coach, principal, and school board member. DSC has all learned so much from Tim through the years and thank him for his selflessness and servant leadership. A plaque was presented to Tim as a token of appreciation from the Duneland School Board for his service to the community.
CHS Science Olympiad Teams place at Invitational
The Chesterton High School Science Olympiad team had a great day at the Northridge Invitational.
Alaina McGrogan and Nicholas Carpentier placed 5th in Anatomy. Izdel Huerta and Nicholas Carpentier placed 8th in Chem Lab. Abby Vidt, Mia Tsugawa, and Oliver Appel placed fifth in Tower. Elizabeth Uehling and Ria Kashyap placed 5th in Fossils. Congratulations to the entire team on their 8th place finish overall!Chesterton-Porter Rotary
November Student of the Month - Elsa Estridge
Chesterton-Porter Rotary recognizes Elsa Estridge as its November Student of the Month.
Estridge was nominated by teacher Colin May and the Art Department at Chesterton High School, who says “Elsa is an absolute powerhouse, She has a uniquely creative vision and the drive to manifest her ideas into tangible, finished artworks. She isn't afraid to make mistakes and try new approaches. We chose Elsa for this award because she is absolutely one of a kind and her creative flexibility, artistic output and her positive attitude stand out. We are so proud of her and encourage everyone to come see her exhibit at the IB Art Show this spring."

STAFF RECOGNITIONS
Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese has announced...
John Sparks named AITJ 2025 Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to CHS Japanese Teacher Mr. John Sparks on being named the recipient of the Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese (AITJ) 2025 Teacher of the Year.
This prestigious award is presented to educators who have made significant and lasting contributions to Japanese language education in Indiana. Mr. Sparks was selected for this honor through a rigorous nomination and voting process conducted by our esteemed members.
Mr. Sparks will be formally recognized for his achievements at the 2025 Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association (IFLTA) Conference, which will take place next November.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
CHS Building Trades
The CHS Building Trades class is building a garage at Dogwood Park, located between the two softball fields off of 1100. The 20'x28' garage is a 2x4 construction with a truss roof. Students started ithe project in mid October by tearing down the old structure. The classes hope to have the metal on the roof soon, followed by vinyl siding.
CHS Early Childhood Education
Yost Elementary School welcomed Chesterton High School's Early Childhood Education students seeking to gain experience in school- aged early learning programs. As part of the early childhood education program, CHS students interacted within the K-3 classrooms. The CHS students gained valuable experience by having the opportunity to read, play, and observe best practice in the Yost classrooms.

In keeping with our Core Values, Duneland School Corporation is committed to fostering partnerships to improve the quality of life in our community. One of our most important partnerships is with our families. As we strive to continue to build upon and strengthen our family partnerships, DSC is applying for renewal from the Indiana Department of Education as an IDOE “Family Friendly Schools” corporation. In doing so, we will continue to “focus on addressing students' academic, physical, emotional, and social needs while providing the needed resources and fostering the active involvement of their families through schools and the community.” (Indiana Department of Education Family Friendly Schools Handbook)

Come check out the Duneland Early Learning HUB! The Duneland School Corporation Early Learning HUB is proud to be the first birth to school initiative in Porter County. The HUB is a place for caregivers and their children to learn, play and grow together.
The HUB is learning about winter, hibernation, migration, holidays and more with our HUB families for December. If you have children ages 0-5, come join in the fun M-F at the HUB. Check out this FREE program at our DSC website.

Located within the Duneland School Corporation, the Trojan Learning Center (TLC) offers a wealth of learning opportunities for young children and their families. The TLC is also home to the offices of the RISE Academy (Alternative Education) and DSC's Northwest Indiana Online School.
Did you know? Our early childhood programs feature FREE Birth-to-School activities for caregivers and children! Duneland School Corporation provides preschool options for children ages 3-5, including two classrooms for children with developmental delays and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), as well as two additional preschool rooms operated by our community partner, the Duneland Family YMCA. All of the preschool classrooms utilize a proven curriculum that helps children grow in thinking, social skills and emotional well-being ensuring each child has a fun and supportive learning experience. Additionally, all preschool students participate in engaging and enjoyable activities together!
The TLC also hosts speech services for children aged 3-5 who qualify. Families can bring their children to work one-on-one with a speech pathologist at our center.
The DSC preschool and walk-in speech services are free for qualifying children. The Duneland Family YMCA preschool is available for a nominal fee. Best of all, Duneland Family Y Preschool held at the Trojan Learning Center is the only local preschool in the area that includes swim classes!

Exceptional Learning Instructional Aide Positions Available
Ready to make a difference in the lives of students? Interested in a fulfilling and rewarding position with no required evening or weekend work? Looking to enjoy the same summer and holiday schedule as your kids? The primary responsibilities of Exceptional Learning (EXL) Instructional Aides range from sharing smiles, making connections, building confidence, encouraging learning, supporting students with instruction in & out of the classroom, and assisting children with self help & self management skills.
DSC is currently searching for select individuals to serve as EXL Instructional Aides. Available positions can start at $19.00, $17.00 or $15.00 per hour. Opportunities exist at elementary, intermediate and secondary levels and can:
- be full-time/benefit-eligible
- be part-time and follow the student school day
- involve sharing the day with a single student
- involve engaging with multiple learners in a classroom setting

2024-2025 School Start & End Times
The new daily schedule for the 2024-2025 school year will be:
- Elementary (K-4) 7:30 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
- High School (9-12) 8:10 a.m. – 3:10 p.m.
- Intermediate/Middle (5-8) 8:50 a.m. – 3:50 p.m.

The DSC Child Nutrition Department utilizes NutriSlice as its menus program. This app is available for iPhone and Android through your mobile app store. Parents can also access the full website for Duneland Schools on a computer via this NutriSlice link.
This app will allow parents and students to view the menus as well as the nutritional info for each menu item at any of the Duneland Schools. This program will be developed further incorporating images of the actual food items being served at each of the Duneland schools.

DSC Strategic Plan 2024-2028
In the Fall of 2023, a strategic planning team was formed to review and update the current four-year strategic plan into a five-year plan that will be used to guide the Corporation from 2024-2028. The new Strategic Plan will guide DSC for the next five years in the areas of Student Achievement, Safety & Operations, People & Culture, and Finance & Facilities.

Comcast Internet Essentials:
Families that qualify for public assistance programs such as the National School Lunch Program, Housing Assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI and other programs may also qualify for the Internet Essentials program from Comcast.
This program offers internet at a low cost per month.
