Eagle Excellence Volume #23
Vivian Banks Charter School: Mar. 17-21, 2025
Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism Update
Attendance this past week was 91.55% which is down from 95.78% the previous week. Over the last four weeks, attendance has averaged 94.65%.
After 127 school days, cumulative attendance is down a bit to 93.17% from 93.56% the previous week, and the cumulative Chronic Absenteeism rate (10% or more of cumulative school days missed) is down - in a good way - to 21.1%.
Four students on the Chronic Absenteeism list will come off once previously completed independent study contracts are approved. Five other students on the list are between 88%-88.8% and can come off the list within the next few weeks, assuming excellent attendance. This all bodes well for a continuing and significant drop to our Chronic Absenteeism rate, as these two factors would put us at a rate of 8.4%.
Thank you for all that each of you do in support of VBCS and student attendance!
Vivian Banks Important Safety Update
Dear Eagle Community,
We want to keep you informed about an important safety update regarding our school facility. During routine safety inspections, the Bonsall Unified School District identified areas that require immediate attention, including termite concerns and other potential hazards. To address these issues, experts are conducting further inspections and developing a mitigation plan. In the short term, in an abundance of caution, some classes will be relocated to other rooms within Vivian Banks to allow the necessary work to proceed. The District is working closely with Chairman Smith and the Diocese to ensure the best support for our students and staff throughout this process.
Bonsall Unified School District is committed to keeping you informed and will provide regular updates as more details become available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Principal Daniel Costa at Daniel.costa@bonsallusd.com.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.
Weekly Message from Mr. Costa
Dear Eagle Community,
Consistent daily attendance is one of the most powerful ways to set our students up for success, both academically and socially! When children are in school every day, they build strong learning habits, develop essential friendships, and stay engaged in the exciting lessons and activities designed to help them grow. Each day brings new opportunities for discovery, collaboration, and achievement, and we don’t want any student to miss out! Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, build confidence, and develop the perseverance needed to thrive in future challenges. Of course, we understand that occasional absences due to illness or emergencies are unavoidable, but whenever possible, we encourage families to make school attendance a top priority. By arriving on time and ready to learn each day, our students gain the consistency and structure that support both their academic success and emotional well-being. Thank you for your partnership in fostering a culture of strong attendance—together, we are building lifelong learners and future leaders!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, ideas, or would like to say hello in person, please feel free to email me at daniel.costa@bonsallusd.com. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you to support the amazing students of Vivian Banks Charter School. Have a wonderful week!
Here's to another excellent week at VBCS. Fly Eagles Fly!
