Help Us Prevent Flu Spread in our Schools
Our school communities are feeling the impact of a nationwide rise in flu cases, with increasing numbers across the county and outbreaks in several of our schools. PGCPS reports that tragically, we have lost two students. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
The health and safety of our students, staff and families remain our highest priority, and we need your help.
The most effective way to prevent the spread of the flu is to keep sick children home. If your child is experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, or body aches, please do not send them to school. We also encourage families to consider flu vaccinations, which can significantly reduce the severity of illness.
Vaccination is also an important step in keeping our schools safe — not just for the flu, but for overall student health. The Prince George’s County Health Department offers flu vaccines at the Cheverly Health Department, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 3pm. Additional resources can be found at pgcps.org/flu.
PGCPS has taken immediate proactive measures to slow the spread of the flu, including:
Enhanced Cleaning – Increased disinfection of high-touch areas in schools and buses.
Handwashing & Hygiene – Ensuring ample soap, paper towels, and hand sanitizer, along with reminders for proper handwashing.
Temporary Masking – If flu cases reach critical levels in a school, we may require temporary masking to safeguard students and staff.
On-Site Flu Vaccination – We are partnering with the Prince George’s County Health Department to provide flu vaccines in affected schools.
Limiting Exposure – Keeping students in consistent groups where possible to limit interactions and contain outbreaks.
Extracurricular Adjustments – Modifying or postponing high-contact activities and large gatherings as needed.
Ongoing Monitoring – We continue to track illness trends, work closely with local health officials, and update families regularly.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students, staff and schools safe.
SCIENCE
In science class, students are researching prevention strategies for athletes with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and creating informative brochures to raise awareness. Through this project, they are applying biology concepts to real-world health challenges, emphasizing safe practices for athletic participation.
Important Safety Reminder from the Nurse’s Office
Students, your safety and well-being are our top priorities! If you or a classmate experience an injury, accident, or medical emergency in the classroom, lab, or anywhere on campus, please follow these steps:
Stay Calm & Notify an Adult Immediately – Alert your teacher or the nearest staff member.
Serious Injuries & Fainting – Do not move the injured person unless instructed. Teachers will call for medical assistance.
Lab Accidents – If chemicals spill on skin or eyes, rinse with water immediately while waiting for help
Help Without Crowding – Give space and follow instructions to ensure the best care is provided.
After any medical situation, students involved or affected should check in with the school counselor for support. Your quick action can make a difference in an emergency! Stay safe and take care of each other.

The Real Impact of Tardiness and Absences
At CMIT North, punctuality matters! Tardiness and Absences affect grades, opportunities, and privileges. Here’s why being on time is essential:
Extracurricular Eligibility ~ Frequent tardiness and absences can mean:
Ineligibility for sports teams, clubs, leadership roles, and honor societies
Missed field trips, competitions, and special events
College & Scholarships
Attendance appears on transcripts, impacting college and scholarship applications
Shows poor time management, affecting teacher recommendations
I found the PGCPS Attendance Policy regarding tardiness and absences. Here’s a summary of key points:
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
PGCPS considers absences excused for reasons such as:
Illness (with a doctor’s note if over three days)
Death in the immediate family (days)
Religious observances
Court appearances
School-approved activities
All other absences are unexcused unless properly documented.
Tardiness Policy
Students arriving after the designated start time are marked tardy.
Repeated tardiness can lead to parent conferences, detention, and disciplinary actions.
Excessive tardiness impacts attendance records, which may affect eligibility for school activities.
Truancy & Consequences
A student is considered truant after ten unexcused absences.
Excessive unexcused absences can lead to parent meetings, academic penalties, and potential legal consequences under Maryland law.
Schools are required to report chronic absences to PGCPS officials and child welfare agencies if necessary.
Make-Up Work
Students with excused absences are allowed to make up missed work within a reasonable timeframe.
Teachers are not required to provide make-up work for unexcused absences.
For the full policy details, visit PGCPS Attendance Policy and CMIT STUDENTS HANDBOOK
