SIS November News Fall 24

Happy November, SIS Families!

It's crazy to think we are already upon November and we have wrapped up two full months of instructional time with students! It's been amazing start to the school year and we know there is so much more to come!

Thank you for investing in your children by spending a little time with your child's teacher during our recent parent/teacher conferences. It was nice to be able to reconnect with you all and share the progress and areas for growth for your child with you!

As we bounce back to learning following our Halloween celebration this past week, we have a few reminders for you:

• With trick-or-treating over, many students have access to more candy than normal. While we understand our students love their sweet treats, please continue to help your child make healthy snack choices for our morning snack time. We do not allow candies or cookies for morning snack. One fun-sized bag of candy with a students lunch is certainly ok, but we do not allow multiple packages of candy or full-sized candy bars to be consumed during the school day. We greatly appreciate your support in helping students make healthy choices.
• We have reached that time of year when the temperature can drop significantly from day-to-day and our SIS students go outside for recess most days. Please encourage your child to wear proper outdoor clothing for recess as students are outside for about 30 minutes following lunch. Gloves and winter hats are a necessity as the winter months begin approaching. Please consider writing your child's name inside his/her coats and/or sweatshirts. Our lost and found is always growing. If we can locate a name we can help get items back to their rightful owner.
• If your child is going to be absent, please email his/her homeroom teacher and our office, at sisoffice@solon.k12.ia.us. Emailing the office is critically important, especially for changes in end of day routines for kids. Teachers are often unable to check emails until after students leave for the day. Emailing both the classroom teacher and the office helps make sure the message is received and passed along.

During the month of October, our Spartan Squad groups and our guidance lessons focused on respect. 4th graders learned about time management and organization while 5th graders learned about time management and goal setting.

We wrapped up the month with a school-wide virtual assembly on Thurs., Oct. 26 which allowed us to celebrate students who were demonstrating responsibility throughout the month!

SIS will celebrate Veteran's Day with a morning assembly that highlights the why behind Veteran's Day and allows students to recognize their special veterans, both past and present, in a specially prepared slide deck. Thank you for sharing your veteran's story with us!

World Kindness Day is Thurs., Nov. 13, SIS will also celebrate by WEARING BLUE, the color of kindness. Please help your child remember to celebrate with us by wearing blue!

Our student celebrations will look a little different in November as our Spartan Squads will be enjoying lunch together on Tuesday, Nov. 26. To help make this a little easier to manage, our kitchen staff will be serving a sack lunch. If your child will be getting school lunch on this day, please notify your child's classroom teacher whether your child would prefer a turkey and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwich in their sack lunch. Teachers will also be reaching out to check on your orders. During our Spartan Squad lunch, we will be sharing what we are grateful for, as our monthly focus is gratitude. We look forward to this time with our small groups!

This month the main focus of our time together has been researching countries using our CultureGrams database. Students were each assigned a country and are working hard to create a travel poster or brochure to share some of the interesting facts they are discovering. Our goal is to have them on display in the Media Center this year as we explore how reading can be an adventure to new and exciting places!

We have great readers at SIS and some long waiting lists for favorite books. Please continue to remind your students to return their books on time so others can enjoy them!

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held Tues., Nov. 7 thru Thurs., Nov. 9. Students will be able to shop during the school day when their class visits the book fair. Parents can also shop online, view shopping hours for students, set up your student's e-wallet account, and sign up to volunteer at the following link:

Solon Community Families, it is time for another Solon Drama Fall Musical Production! We are presenting Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief: The Musical very soon and are super excited to share it with the community! This Fall has been so fast, that it is almost time to purchase tickets! All tickets will be purchased online, otherwise, if still available, can be bought in person at the door, on show days! Tickets prices are as follows: $7, $10 & $12, depending on where you are seated!
