Jessie Redmon Fauset
Born on April 27, 1882, in Camden County, New Jersey, Jessie Redmon Fauset grew up in Philadelphia, where she attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She earned a scholarship to Cornell University, becoming one of the first, if not the first, Black female students at the institution. In 1905, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in classical languages. Following her studies, Fauset dedicated herself to teaching, working in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
Her literary career took flight in 1912 when she began writing for The Crisis, the official magazine of the NAACP, co-founded and edited by W. E. B. Du Bois. She contributed poetry, essays, and reviews for several years before assuming the role of literary editor in 1919, prompting her move to New York City.
As literary editor, Fauset played a pivotal role in shaping the Harlem Renaissance by introducing and mentoring emerging Black writers, including Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Anne Spencer, bringing their voices to a national audience.
Through her vision, editorial leadership, and unwavering support for Black writers, Fauset played an instrumental role in amplifying African American literature, leaving an enduring legacy in American literary and cultural history.
