Skills for Life: A Virtual Learning Series
Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Training and Consultation Team for this virtual training series.
Each session will focus on one skill with time for an overview, ideas for integration of these essential skills in the classroom, and resource sharing followed by networking regarding practical ways to integrate executive function in the curriculum.
Intended Audience: K-12 General Education Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Transition Coordinators, Administrators, Special Education Liaisons, Parents, Paraeducators, Speech Language Pathologists, School Counselors & Psychologists, Occupational/Physical Therapists, Building Principals as well as other building-level administrators, District-Level Administrators, Agency Personnel, Curriculum Directors, Special Education Liaisons
It is not required to attend every session, however it is strongly encouraged to attend all sessions

*Nine (9) Act 48 Hours will be awarded upon completion of the series*
*One (1) credit hour will be awarded per session attended*
- Participants will be introduced to the 11 domain areas of executive function to gain a quick overview prior to taking a deeper dive into each individual area.

Session 2: Response Inhibition
- Thinking before you act, resisting the urge to say or do something are those skills necessary in applying response inhibition.

Session 3: Emotional Control
- The ability to manage emotions to achieve goals, complete tasks, or control and direct behavior can impact emotional control.

Session 4: Working Memory
- Working Memory is the capacity to hold information in mind while performing complex tasks. It can be the most difficult to support as we rely on it all the time.

Session 5: Sustained Attention
- Paying attention to a situation or task despite distractions, fatigue or boredom can be difficult to manage throughout a busy school day.

Session 6: Task Initiation, Planning, and Prioritizing
- Planning & prioritizing is the ability to create a roadmap to reach a goal or complete a complex task and make decisions about what’s important to focus on while balancing the ability to begin projects, assignments, and activities without undoing procrastination.

Session 7: Goal Directed Persistence
- Setting goals and working toward them without begin sidetracked by competing interests are necessary skill sets when applying goal directed persistence.
