Curtis Chronicles
February 12, 2024
Welcome from Curtis Principal, Sonya Pitcock
Cougar Families,
We are moving right along with this school year and your kids are doing great. We have a few reminders we are going over with kids and want to make sure parents are aware as well. Students are to keep their phones in their backpacks and are not allowed to use them during the day without permission. Lately, we’ve had lots of students get their phones picked up because their parents are texting them during the day. We understand occasionally plans may change and you need to communicate with your kids, but you are welcome to call the office to leave a message so your child doesn’t get their phone picked up. As a reminder, we expect students to keep their phones put in their backpacks to avoid the constant distraction of the phone. Apple watches being used to text will also be taken up as essentially that is the same distraction as their phone. We appreciate the reminders you can provide to your students at home and your support in not texting your child during the day.
As another reminder, the front of the building is for BUSES ONLY during drop off in the morning and afternoon. Parents stopped in the front slow down our buses from dropping and getting to their next route so the high school students can get to school on time. This has truly become a large problem in the morning lately so PLEASE help us with this, even it you think you’ll be quick and there isn’t a bus you can see. It is also a safety concern because some parents are passing buses who are unloading with their stop signs out. We have these same procedures in all types of weather, so if it’s raining, please plan more time for drop off in your morning routine as we typically have more parents dropping off. If you are dropping off AFTER 8:15, you can drop in the front.
Our school day starts at 8:20 which means any student not in their classroom at 8:20 will be counted tardy. 1st period tardies do lead to truancy notification and potential actions. We recommend your students get to school no later than 8:15 so they have time to walk to their classroom and be there by 8:20.
Absences need to be accompanied by an excuse note from a parent or doctor within three days of the absence. You can submit that through skyward, or a written note dropped off in the office with our attendance clerk, Mrs. Weaver. After three days, the absences will not be able to be excused by state law. Please make sure your child drops those notes off or you submit those in skyward.
We are close to our goal for CMS participation in the Eagle Run on March 2. If you haven’t signed up, or signed up your child, there is still time! We are handing out CMS coupon books to students who sign up. Coupon books include some free passes such as front of the line, forgot my ID, forgot my cougar card, forgot to turn in an assignment on time (late work pass), etc. The booklet has been a big hit so ask your child about it!
Lastly, we look forward to participating in Love Week this week as a long time tradition to support our local community. Please consider participating in the spirit nights this week, the carnival at AHS or sending a dollar with your child for your child to watch the CMS Staff versus Student basketball game on Friday. Please see the flyer for details!
We hope you all have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Sonya Pitcock
