Mary M. Knight
Weekly Family Update for the week of March 10, 2025
Mary M. Knight Mission
Our Mission is to ensure that all students have the knowledge, skills, motivation, and confidence to be successful citizens.
Vision (who we must become):
We are a community of learners and leaders united to enrich the lives of all our students.
Principal's Message
Dear Mary M. Knight Families,
As we move into the second week of March, I'm energized by the incredible work happening throughout our school community. This week is filled with opportunities that exemplify our mission of ensuring all students have the knowledge, skills, motivation, and confidence to be successful citizens.
I'm particularly proud of the GRIT and resilience our students are demonstrating. From our elementary students who were recognized at last month's awards assembly to our SkillsUSA Club members preparing to showcase their talents at the state competition later this month, our students continue to embody our growth mindset philosophy.
This week brings the start of middle school sports with track and baseball beginning on Monday, and I encourage you to support our student-athletes as they begin their spring seasons. Wednesday's late start provides us valuable time for professional collaboration, and I hope to see many of you at the PTO meeting that afternoon.
The Farm to School program's recent visit highlighted our commitment to nutrition education and supporting local agriculture. These experiences connect our students to the community while providing valuable learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting.
Looking ahead, please remember that spring conferences are approaching on March 26-27. This will be an important opportunity to connect with families about student progress and growth.
Thank you for your continued dedication to fostering an environment where our students can thrive. Your commitment to our vision of being "a community of learners and leaders united to enrich the lives of all our students" is evident in all you do.
Go Owls!

Try-Day
This week, our students had a wonderful opportunity to experience the Farm to School program firsthand! Margaret Garrett, the Regional Farm to School Coordinator from our Educational Service District, and Pamela Bish, the SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator from WSU Mason & Grays Harbor Counties Extension, visited our school to provide a special culinary experience.
Students were treated to a delicious beef stew featuring an array of fresh, locally sourced vegetables including carrots, green beans, onions, yellow potatoes, celery root, rutabaga, turnips, and herbs like basil, thyme, and parsley.
This taste-testing event not only introduced our students to nutritious, locally grown foods but also helped them understand the connection between local agriculture and healthy eating. The Farm to School program is one of many ways we're working to promote good nutrition and support our local farming community.
Be sure to check out the accompanying photos showing our students enjoying this special lunch event! We look forward to more collaborations like this that enrich our students' educational experiences while supporting local agriculture.
Thank you to Ms. Garrett and Ms. Bish for bringing this wonderful program to Mary M. Knight!
Mary M. Knight Students Head to SkillsUSA State Competition!
We're excited to announce that our talented SkillsUSA Club members will be representing Mary M. Knight at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Tacoma from March 27-29, 2025!
Our dedicated students have been preparing diligently to showcase their skills in various categories. The Mary M. Knight team will be competing in two events:
- American Spirit: Cloey, Andiana, and Logan
- Entrepreneurship: Bella, Hayden Roberts, Lexi, and Hayden Hughes
This prestigious competition provides an incredible opportunity for our students to demonstrate their technical abilities, leadership skills, and career readiness on a state level. They'll join hundreds of other talented students from across Washington in events that challenge both their technical and professional skills.
While at the competition, our students will participate in specialized contests, leadership development activities, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The event culminates with an awards ceremony on March 29th, where we hope to celebrate their achievements!
Our SkillsUSA advisor, Mr. Garrett Johannes, has been working tirelessly to prepare our students for this opportunity. The team will depart on March 27th and return to Mary M. Knight on March 29th.
We're incredibly proud of these students for their dedication and commitment to excellence. Please join us in wishing them the best of luck as they represent our school and community at this prestigious event!
We'll be sure to share updates and photos from the competition on our social media channels. Go Owls!

Secondary Tutoring - Are you in grades 7-12 and want tutoring?
Dear MMK Families,
Our secondary tutoring program continues to provide academic support for students in grades 7-12. The program runs Tuesday through Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, offering students direct assistance from teachers on assignments and assessments.
Students must attend the full session unless prior arrangements for early pickup are confirmed by parents. While this is a valuable opportunity for academic support, families need to arrange transportation at 4:30 PM, as bus service is not available. Please note that tutoring should not be used as a waiting period for after-school events.
For questions about the program, please contact the main office.
