Phoenix Family Newsletter
August 26, 2024
Principal's Note
Hello Phoenix Families,
Wow, we're in the swing of it now! It feels like we've been together forever at this point, and we officially have a great group of students this year! This week, we will be administering our beginning-of-year district MAP tests in Math, Reading, and Science. This data helps to assess the growth and progress made by our students each year. While we use far more than this data point to understand our students, it does help to provide a snapshot into how they are responding to instruction throughout the year. If you have any questions about MAP testing, please let me know at sflynn@wscloud.org.
Beyond MAP testing, though, we're also getting to know our students through conversations, daily assignments, and regular interactions with peers at school. I don't get to spend nearly as much time with each student as you or our teachers, but I have learned so much about so many of them already. One thing that stands out about this year's group is their appreciation of one another. Students from very different walks of life are able to compete together in the House Cup, share solutions in Math, and engage in deep conversations in Connections. I see students excited to come to school and see one another each day, and that just makes me more excited to get here, as well. Let's keep this positivity rolling as we get ready for September and (eventually) the cool Autumn weather than accompanies it.
Be good to one another,
Dr. Flynn

Phoenix Mastery Assessment Portal Registration
Please see below for a message for all of our families with students that are new to Phoenix. If your student was at Phoenix for seventh grade last year, you should already be registered. Phoenix students will be completing their student registration on Monday, 8/19. Parents, please plan to complete your parent registration on Tuesday, 8/20 (but before our 9/4 Parent Forum). A discussion of our Phoenix Mastery Assessment Portal will take place during our 9/4 Parent Forum, so it is important to do this parent registration before the Parent Forum.
Subject: Important: Register for the Phoenix Mastery Assessment Portal (M.A.P.)
Dear Phoenix Middle School Parents,
As your child begins seventh grade, we want to ensure you are fully equipped to support their academic success. Yesterday, you should have received a letter sent home with your student containing your child’s unique Student ID number, which is required to register for the Phoenix Mastery Assessment Portal (M.A.P.), our online grading and reporting system designed specifically for Phoenix families.
The Phoenix Mastery Assessment Portal is your gateway to staying informed about your child's academic progress. It is the only way to view their grades as we do not post grades to Infinite Campus or issue hard copy interims & report cards unless specifically requested. With M.A.P., you can easily track your child's progress, receive timely updates, and ensure they are mastering the curriculum.
How to Register:
Step 1: Retrieve Your Student’s ID
- You will find your child's Student ID number in the letter sent home by Phoenix staff, or you can access Infinite Campus, and find your child's student ID under their profile photo.
Step 2: Register Your Contact Information
- Visit the M.A.P. Parent/Guardian registration page (https://phxmap.org/guardian/register) and fill out the form with your details.
Registration:
- Option 1: Register as a couple (e.g., First Name: Robert & Stephanie, Last Name: Estice).
- Option 2: Register separately (e.g., Account 1: Robert Estice, Account 2: Stephanie Estice).
- Remember to use a secure Username/Password that you can easily recall. If you ever forget your password, you can reset it using the “Forgot Password?” link on the MAP login page at phxmap.org.
- If you wish to receive text updates on weekly grade reports, be sure to enter your cell number and service provider.
Step 3: Complete Your Registration
- Review your information and click "Register."
- Note: You can register multiple users—additional guardians, stepparents, grandparents, etc.—to use the Assessment Portal.
Understanding Mastery Assessment:
Since the concept of Mastery Assessment may be new to many families, we encourage you to review the Mastery Assessment Manual (also available on our website). Additionally, we will devote most of our first Parent Forum on September 4, 2024, to explaining and discussing Mastery Assessment at Phoenix. We strongly encourage you to attend.
Need Help?
We’re here to assist! If you have any questions or encounter any issues during registration, please reach out to our M.A.P. site administrators:
- Robert Estice: restice@wscloud.org
- Tony Kabealo: ckabealo@wscloud.org
Please make it a priority to complete the registration as soon as possible. Your active involvement is essential to your child's success at Phoenix Middle School.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter. We look forward to a successful school year together!
Best regards,
Phoenix Staff
Washington D.C. Trip Meeting

The next meeting for the Washington D.C. trip will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd. This meeting is for parents and students who are interested in enrolling in the trip, or who would like to find out more.

Phoenix band students need a band shirt for performances. Miss Bovaird will be sending details to band families. The $16 band shirt can be paid for on-line through the Activity tab in My Payments Plus at https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome. While paying for the shirt through My Payments Plus, the system will have you select the shirt size for your band student. Payment is due by September 21, please. You need not purchase a shirt if your student isn't in band at Phoenix. There is also an option to purchase a shirt to help provide for a student in need. 8th grade band students: If you have a band polo from last year, you do not need to purchase a new band polo.
Yearbook Pictures Requested
Phoenix students that are photographed by HR Imaging on our school picture day, 8/22, will have a picture in our 2024-2025 Phoenix yearbook. We would love to have pictures of our students participating in their athletic and extracurricular activities. Please use the link below to upload pictures that you take that you would be interested in having included in our yearbook:

Centegix Pilot
Our students' safety is always our top priority. This semester, our school has been chosen to pilot a new safety alert system for Worthington Schools. This system is a simple and effective way for any staff member to be able to request help from building administration or first responders with the click of a button. If you would like more information about the system, please reach out to Dr. Flynn for more details.
Eighth Grade Students - Phoenix Fall Cook-Out

Seventh Grade Students - Camp Phoenix
Instead of going to an overnight camp this year, our Phoenix seventh grade students will have Camp Phoenix during the school day from September 25 to September 27 at Phoenix. Camp Phoenix has an activity cost of $70 per student. There is an option on the Activity Tab in My Payments Plus for Camp Phoenix 2024 for seventh grade families to pay the $70 on-line at https://www.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome.
