Principal's Message
The start of the new school year is nearly here and we are excited to welcome our rising sixth graders and new 7th & 8th grade students to the campus during our 6th Grade and New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 17. The orientation will begin prompty at 8:30 AM in our school auditorium. During the orientation students will have an opportunity to tour the campus, meet the Pershing teaching team and support staff, and purchase PE items. Sixth graders will also be able swap out their chromebooks for a new one. Sixth graders must bring their old chromebook with them in order to receive a new one.
We are expecting large crowds and long lines during the orientation so for your convenience the library and financial office will be open Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM for families to come purchase PE gear and swap out chromebooks in advance so they do not have to wait in the lines during orientation.
If you are unable to attend the orientation not to worry, students will still have an opportunity during the first week of school to purchase PE items and for sixth graders to swap out their chromebooks.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
Important Announcements for the Week of August 14
THE FIRST 3 DAYS OF SCHOOL ARE MINIMUM DAY SCHEDULE
A friendly reminder that Monday, August 21 - Wednesday, August 23 we will be on a minimum day schedule. Student will be released at 12:44 PM. A copy of the daily bell schedule is available on our school website.
WHEN WILL MY CHILD FIND OUT THEIR CLASS SCHEDULE AND WHO THEIR TEACHERS ARE?
Students will receive their class schedule on the first day of school. Sixth graders will make their way to the grassy area in front of the school just inside the gates where tables will be set up. Students will be able to pick up their class schedule at the tables. They will line up by their first period teacher's name and then their first period teacher will escort them to their first class.
Seventh and eighth graders will report to the lunch arbor before school begins. There will be large posters in the lunch arbor with your last name and your first period teacher's name and room number listed. When the 7:55 AM bell rings you will proceed to your first period teacher's classroom. Your first period teacher will hand out your class schedule for the new school year.
PANTHERS DO YOU STILL HAVE TEXTBOOKS OR BOOKS FROM LAST SCHOOL YEAR?
If your Pershing student has one or more textbooks checked out to them from previous years, you may return these textbooks to the Pershing Library Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. If there are any additional questions, please call Jakalah Jones at 619-362-3550 or email her at jjones7@sandi.net. Thank you in advance for your support.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
As a public school, Pershing will provide any school supplies that are required for a student's academic program (i.e. paper, pencil, etc.). Teachers will also typically provide a suggested supply list for their specific course in the class syllabus they distribute during the first week of school.
That being said, many families prefer to purchase their own personalized supplies. Below is a list of SUGGESTED school supplies that will work for all grade levels and aligns with our AVID program:
- Backpack
- 1 1/2" 3-ring binder with subject dividers
- pencil pouch
- pencils
- pens (blue & black ink preferred)
- highlighter
- scissors
- calculator
- glue stick
- colored pencils
- lined paper
- college-rule single subject spiral notebooks (one for each core subject)
FREE SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM CONTINUES FOR 2023-24
The State of California has continued its commitment to its Universal Meals program that allows CA public school students to receive one breakfast and one lunch each school day at no cost. However, this school year meal eligibility applications will be necessary. A copy of the meal eligibility application will be sent home in the welcome packet all students will receive from their first period teachers during the second week of school.
There is no denying the many benefits and conveniences that cell phones have brought and we hear frequently from parents that they enjoy the convenience of communicating with their child by cell phone, especially if there is an emergency.
The research, however, is increasingly clear that for adolescents in particular, there are many negative side effects that come with cell phone and social media use . These negative side effects include: distractibility in the classroom, anxiety, negative self-image, feelings of isolation, loss of sleep and cyberbullying just to name a few. In fact, concerns about the impact of smartphones and social media on adolescents has become so great the U.S. Surgeon General has even issued an advisory about the effects of social media on youth mental health.
That is why we want Pershing to be a place where students "unplug" from their cell phones and social media and focus on reconnecting with their peers and avoid the distractions that make learning more challenging. Cell phones must be silenced and in students' backpacks during school hours. Phone may only be used before and after school.
We hope families will speak with their middle schoolers not just about the cell phone policy but also the reasoning behind it. Below are some articles about the impact of cell phones and social media on adolescents and their learning:

Negative Health Review of Cell Phones and Social Media
