Advanced Phonemic Awareness Daily Instruction Using Heggerty 24-25 School Year
Phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, which are called phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware is able to isolate sounds, manipulate the sounds, blend and segment the sounds into spoken and written words.


Phonemic awareness is central in learning to read and spell. (Ehri, 1984)


Phonemic awareness is the most potent predictor of success in learning to read. (Stanovich, 1986)

This three-hour workshop will provide an overview of phonological and phonemic awareness, distinguish the differences between phonological awareness and phonics, and how to use the Heggerty curriculum to provide daily, multisensory lessons in phonological and phonemic awareness.

This workshop is intended for teachers in grades Pre-K through grade 5.


Sample pages from each curriculum will be available during the workshop, but it is recommended participants bring their book to the workshop.
