News from the PTA
PTA Myths ............. BUSTED!
MYTH: Joining PTA requires you to volunteer.
TRUTH: If you want to volunteer, that’s great, but your support as a member is enough. The PTA appreciates all members, not just members who volunteer.
MYTH: I don't have time.
TRUTH: YOU decide how much time you can give. If you are unable to volunteer your time, please consider giving your financial support and help fund activities for the children throughout the year.
At its most basic level, "joining the PTA" is not about volunteering. It's about advocacy. Your decision to purchase a PTA membership (and stay current on what is happening with the school) is significant all by itself. You can also be a champion for our school by offering financial support.
MYTH: I will be expected to go to all the meetings.
TRUTH: ABSOLUTELY NOT! Every person has a different capacity to give and be involved. We offer PM and AM meetings to provide a variety of options for our families.
By joining the PTA you WILL be notified when there are volunteer opportunities, when specific events are being held and any other information, we feel it is important for you to have as parents in our community.

Mindfulness
Back to school season can bring on a plethora of positive feelings! We are thrilled for those who are excited, optimistic, and pleased to be back to school. We are too!
For some friends, starting school may cause a bit of anxiety. Especially if you're in a new school from the previous year. That's normal. One strategy to share with your little person, is the calming cocoon. What I love about the calming cocoon is that you can do it anywhere, anytime and no one will know what you're feeling. It even works for grownups. Give it a try. Wishing you calm and contentment on this long holiday weekend.

PBIS
Thank you to all the families who returned the PBIS commitment sheet included with our pamphlet. Our staff and students are dedicated to being respectful, responsible, and safe as stated in our Positive Behavior Matrix. Students can earn “red tickets” for following the matrix expectations. Every Friday, teachers pull two red tickets, and the students can come to the lobby for a special prize!
Medications and Health Information - Please read!
If your child has a medical condition and/or requires medication at school, please download the forms your child needs for school, based on their health conditions (Life-Threatening Food and/or Insect Allergy, Allergy IHCP, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure Disorder). New forms must be completed by you and your child’s physician each year (dated after the last day of school of the previous school year). Please ensure that the forms include both your signature and your child’s doctor’s signature. We cannot dispense any medication without these completed forms. Forms can be found on our school website under the parent tab as “Health Forms”.
Medications and forms can be brought to the school office anytime moving forward. Don't delay in sharing medical updates as you get updated information.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Serazio at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org.

PBIS Corner
Welcome back Tiger Families-
We were excited to see everyone back at school this week! Your Tiger came home with our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) pamphlet. This pamphlet explains our behavioral expectations for the year. Please review this and return the middle section next week. We look forward to celebrating our Tigers this year!
Art with Ms. Salvia
Our Cub Crew Artists created beautiful butterflies out of coffee filters and pipe cleaners. We used washable markers to color the coffee filters, and then blotted them with water to make the colors blend. We had fun folding and crumpling the filters to shape them into butterfly wings!
OOPS! What can we do when we make a mistake? All grade levels had a blast reading Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg. The book explores creative ways to transform mistakes into something beautiful. Sometimes, mistakes happen in art and that's okay. We can be creative with mistakes! We giggled and laughed at how author Barney Saltzberg shows what to do with tears, rips, stains, and holes in our papers. Make it into something new! Each student artist was given a blank sheet of paper with an "oops" (a tear, fold, or hole in the paper) and were challenged to create something new out of it.
Kindergarten and 1st grade got creative this week with colored paper and were challenged to create a "roller coaster" or "playground" by bending, folding, and gluing the paper in several different ways. We had so much fun imagining our roller coasters and playgrounds so we could bring them to life on paper!
Go Tiger Artists!
This week, grades 2-4 also began sketching ideas for their "Illustrated Names." Student artists were asked to brainstorm things that represent who they are or hobbies they enjoy, and then decorate each letter with something different. We will use our sketches to begin our final masterpieces next week.
Grades K-1 began learning about Line. How do artists draw lines? Can I draw a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line? Squiggly or Zig-Zag lines? We had fun tracing and drawing our own lines after listening to "The Line Song."
Music with Ms. Grammatico
It was a great week in the music room! 3rd and 4th graders learned a greeting song called "How Do You Do-Ti" where they had to cross their arms, hold hands, and bounce to the steady beat. It was a lot of fun! They also learned a chant called "All Are Welcome" and created their own rhythms to add a "B" section to the song. Next week we will add body percussion!
2nd graders continued learning the songs "Oh in the Woods," "Peep Squirrel," and "William He Had Seven Sons." They also were introduced to basic body percussion motions-- Clap, Snap, Pat, and Stomp.
Kindergarten and 1st graders continued the songs "No More Pie," "Frog in the Meadow," and "Chop Chop Chippity Chop." Ask your child to sing them to you! They also played the triangle.
LMC with Mr. Pinta
Good News! Students will be returning to the library for the first time in our new space next week. I'm really looking forward to all of the reactions, questions, and comments that are to come; there have been so many when I've visited classroom for instruction these first two weeks, and the excitement I have heard in the hallways when kids pass the library is so amazing.
This week our focus throughout all grades here at Roosevelt has been on rules in the library, specifically our voice level, walking feet, and treatment of the new furniture, shelves, and equipment. We also revisited book care including washing our hands, how to carry our books, keeping books clean, dry, and away from food and drink.
Looking forward to a great first week in the library!
PLTW with Mr. Morrow
Hello Scientists and Families!
This week in PLTW we focused on developing the growth mindset! We learned that through the power of "YET" we can achieve most things. Students made a personal goal about something that they did not feel that they were particularly skilled in ... YET! We discussed ways that we can use language to guide our thinking positively. Team building and communication was also a focus while we tried to work as a 6 person team to build a tower! Our scientists are ready to dig in to some challenging concepts with the power of yet! Encourage your students to discuss ways in which they approached a challenging task with positivity.
See you next week!
