Cascade View Newsletter 05/24/2024
I can’t believe we are nearing the end of May already! This month has been filled with several areas of perseverance for our staff and students. We have wrapped up our Smarter Balanced Assessments in grades 3-6, performed our 2nd and 4th grade (+ Mrs. Berg’s 3rd graders) music concert, held our Banding Together Band concert at CMS, recognized our hard-working staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, and started some of our grade level field trips. The end of a school year is filled with many exciting things. Next week we will hold our Monthly Awards Assembly for Perseverance and have a spirit day of Super Heroes on Friday May 31st. Several important end of the year announcements will be coming out over the next couple of weeks. We will have final turn in deadlines for all library books and student computers, report cards will be coming home, and we will complete the last of our school events to wrap up our year. Let’s hope for a return of the nice weather to finish out our final few weeks of school. Enjoy the 3-day holiday weekend!
Is it Bullying or is it Conflict? How to best help your child
Isabel Church, Cascade View School Counselor
What is Conflict?
Conflict is a disagreement or problem between people having equal power to solve the problem. It is a typical part of life and occurs often. It happens anywhere people are likely to be together. Conflicts are opportunities to learn how to problem solve.
Children and Conflict
Learning how to navigate in a world where conflict occurs is an important part of growing up. Children often tell adults they trust about the conflict in their lives. This is a good thing! Listening with an empathic ear is important. Ask them how they can handle the situation after they have had time to talk and be heard. Offer suggestions after they have shared some of their ideas how they want to address the conflict. Give them the time and space to try out their solutions without rescuing them from learning how to navigate their world when conflict occurs. School conflicts provide important opportunities to learn important social skills.
Helping Children Cope with Conflict
Understand that you do not have to fix or make things better for the child. Discuss options for solving the problem. Ask them which option they want to try out themselves. If it is not working, ask them what else they would like to try. Compliment children for working things out on their own. Children need tools and lots of practice to cope and manage on their own.
What is Bullying?
Bullying is repeated and intentional behavior with the purpose of hurting someone physically, emotionally, or socially. There is an imbalance of power where the bully is seeking to have power and control. Bullying is not a typical part of daily life and should be reported to adults.
Helping Children Handle Bullying
Teach children to refuse bullying by using strategies to refuse and stand up to the bully. They should be assertive when standing up to the bully by looking at them directly and saying in a strong serious voice, “Stop, that’s bullying, and it is NOT okay.” This teaches them to keep their power by not letting themselves be a victim or a target. Encourage them to report bully situations to adults who can help solve the problem. It is important that they also use their bystander power to speak up and report bullying when they see it happening and to offer support to the victim/target of the bullying. Another way to reduce bullying is by including others, especially those that are left out.
PTA NEWS
Playground Update-In the Summer of 2022 we began the process of meeting with the school district, playground companies and raising money to purchase some new playground equipment for our school. This has been a big goal for our PTA over the past 2 years. After our Walk A Thon this year, we continued those meetings to finalize details to pass off this project to the School District. We are super excited to say that earlier this evening, the School Board approved our Donation for a new Playground!!! The next steps will be for the district to order the equipment and arrange for the installation of this playground! We will keep you posted on the progress throughout the summer. A huge THANK YOU to all of you who have donated, raised funds, and helped to make this a possibility for all our students.
Field Day- CVE Olympics will be held on Thursday June 13th! K-2 will be in the morning from 9:30am-11am. 3rd-6th will be in the afternoon from 1:20pm-3:00pm. After School Plan Changes
Here are a few things that you can do to help us:
1- Have a regular after school plan.
2- If there is change in your child's after school plans, please be sure to contact the school office, before 2:45pm (12:45pm on Friday and 11:15am on half days). You may email the office, send in a signed note, or call the office in the morning (360-563-7000) to change plans. The end of the day is a very busy time for us so we greatly appreciate knowing of these changes in the morning whenever possible.
Phones and other electronic devices
The use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices (i.e. smart watches, headphones, ear buds) is prohibited while on school grounds. Any noise from these devices is considered disruptive to the learning environment. Teachers will expect such devices to be put away and silenced during the school day. Failure to comply with this may result in the device being turned into the office and progressive disciplinary action.
* The first time a phone/device is turned in to the office, it may be picked up by the student at the end of the day after staff has contacted a parent.
* The second time a phone/device is turned in, it must be picked up by a parent.
Office phones are available for student use in cases of emergency.
