2nd Quarter News & Notes
Morton Junior High School; December/January 2024
2nd quarter has absolutely flown by. Students have been busy participating in many extra curricular activities. We have hosted numerous events, including concerts, a chess tournament, basketball games and the Potter Pride Night. Volleyball and wrestling are both just beginning their winter seasons. December is a very busy month
Keep scrolling to check out a few of the fun events and moments of the quarter and to preview some upcoming events we hope to see many students at!
Help-A-Thon Bonus Trip
A few weeks ago, students who raised $250 or more for the Help-a-Thon had the opportunity to volunteer at the Salvation Army's Toys for Tots Warehouse. Students unboxed crates of toys, organized and counted boxes and boxes of toys that are being donated to children this Christmas season.
Students had fun while organizing and also enjoyed a bite to eat after all of their hard work. We hope students learn the importance of giving back to the community, especially during the holiday season!
Potter Pride Night
In early November we had our annual Potter Pride Night. We kicked off the night with the girls basketball game vs. Washington. We had performances from the dance team, the cheer team and the pep band. We also had introductions for our jazz band and ended the night with a boys basketball scrimmage to kick off their season. It was a great night recognizing many of the activities our students in are involved in. A special thanks for all the parents who volunteers and helped make this night a success!
Girls STEM Day at Caterpillar
A group of 8th grade girls were able to experience the STEM day at Caterpillar earlier this month. The goal of the event is to teach 8th grade girls about STEM fields, as well as introduce them to female (and male) role models in STEM careers. This year the event, held at the Edwards Demonstration Center in central IL, hosted more than 500 girls from public and private schools. This event helped to promote diversity in STEM fields and make a better tomorrow for everyone.

Care U Book Study
Care U: Book Study
Care-U is a platform filled with resources and reflection prompts for anyone doing the most rewarding, exhausting, joy-filled, and hard work of raising and caring for children. It is our intention to provide accessible content in a non-shaming and non-blaming manner. The Care-U podcast is an integral part of this mission. We are excited to expand our reach and offer another Care-U: 709 Community Book Study. We will use the contents of the book to cultivate an engaging and reflective discussion and walk alongside the caregivers in our Morton CUSD 709 community. Anxious Generation written by Jonathan Haidt will be the tool we use to drive our discussions. In the book Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt a social psychologist lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness. We would like to invite a conversation around this very important topic!
