Unlocking the Possibilities!!!
Dear Friends,
Happy May! For the average family, May is busier than December. This week alone we are celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week and Mother's Day, not to mention all the graduations already beginning to take place. Whether your baby or loved one is graduating from Pre-K and headed to the "big school", or your twenty-something is preparing to walk into the scary stage of adulthood, congratulations for getting them to this phase of their journey.
This week I was blessed to attend an 8th-grade graduation. I was moved by the words of one of my favorite principals (shout out Mrs. McCauley). In her commencement message for the 8th-grade class of 2024, she stressed the importance of focusing on "progress, not perfection" when they get to high school, and in life. Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! Thank you for taking the time to recognize this for the students but this was a great reminder for all of the adults in the room as well. Helping kids strive for continuous progress helps them to break free from the paralyzing grip of perfectionism, and instead focus on what truly matters: self-awareness, grit, growth, resilience, and authenticity.
As parents and teachers, one of our most important roles is helping kids fall in love with learning. Empowering them to take risks, pursue their passions, and overcome obstacles with courage and determination. Let's focus on planting a message centered on the journey, not the destination.
This week let's work towards progress. Learning to be proud of even the smallest step forward. Identifying any moment we have evolved, grown, and tried our best. Happy Mother's Day to all the hardworking, dedicated, compassionate amazing moms who love in big and small ways every day!
With A Grateful Heart

Skills For Success
Helping Kids Notice Progress - Strengthening Self Awareness
The concept of "progress over perfection" encourages us to embrace our imperfections, view setbacks as opportunities for learning and development, and celebrate the small victories along the way. It reminds us that life is not about achieving perfection, but rather striving for a habit of continuously evolving, pushing boundaries, and becoming the best versions of ourselves. Here are a few fun ideas to help children learn how to identify progress and chart their strengths.
1. Goal Setting: Encourage kids to set specific, achievable goals for themselves in various areas of their lives; such as academics, sports, hobbies, or their relationships with friends.
2. Visual Timeline: Use a wall calendar to create a timeline or progress chart where kids can mark milestones and accomplishments over time.
3. Reflection Journals: Encourage kids to keep a reflection journal (or gratitude journal) where they can write about their accomplishments, experiences, and feelings, to help chart their progress.
4. Self-Assessment Surveys: Provide kids with simple self-assessment surveys or questionnaires to help evaluate their progress and performance. This helps them identify and name their progress!
5. Progress Photos or Videos: Take photos or videos of kids engaging in activities or achieving milestones, and create a visual record of their progress.
6. Dinner Time Shout Out: Establish a “shout out” ritual to acknowledge the tiny moments in the day when they took a risk, tried something new, or accomplished a goal they’ve been working towards.
7. Make A List: It sounds simple but take a goal and break it down into small steps,. Cross each step off the list as it is accomplished, nothing is too small!
8. Imagine and Dream: Take time to snuggle and imagine what it will feel like once they've accomplished the goal they set. How will they feel? What will make them proud?
By implementing these creative methods for charting progress, it will help kids develop an awareness of their growth and accomplishments; fostering confidence, motivation, and a positive sense of self.
