Celebrating Heroism and Kindness
Our 5th-grade students at Center School are taking their first steps toward becoming community leaders after reading The Man in the Red Bandana, a book that tells the remarkable story of Welles Crowther. Welles, a young man whose bravery and selflessness shined brightly on September 11, 2001, became a hero through his courageous actions. His iconic red bandana, which he used to protect his face while helping others, has since become a symbol of his heroism and kindness.
Through this reading, our students will explore the qualities that define a hero and reflect on the heroes in their own lives. This learning experience goes beyond the classroom as each 5th grader has received a red bandana, representing Welles' bravery and the values of compassion and leadership that he embodied.
To honor Welles and all heroes, our students will wear their red bandanas on the 11th of each month. This will serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of courage and kindness in our world. On these days, students will also participate in a special civic leadership activity at Center School.
This month, they will be planting a Survivor Tree, generously donated by Paul’s and Sandy’s. This tree, a living symbol of resilience and hope, will serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who show courage in the face of adversity. You can learn more about the Survivor Tree here: https://www.911memorial.org/visit/memorial/survivor-tree
We are excited to see our students engage with this meaningful project, and we look forward to the important conversations and reflections that will come from exploring what it truly means to be a hero.
Start With Hello Week
Next week, Center School will participate in "Start With Hello Week". This special week, scheduled for 9/16-9/20 is a wonderful initiative aimed at fostering a sense of inclusion, kindness, and friendship among our students.
During Start With Hello Week, our students will engage in various activities and discussions centered around building connections and reaching out to others. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming school environment where every student feels valued and included. By teaching our children the power of a simple "hello" and the impact it can have on someone's day, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community.
We look forward to sharing our kindness challenges and activities in next week's Chronicle!
Monday - Hey Day
All students will receive a name tag. Empower students and Trusted Adults to introduce themselves to each other and form connections!
Quote: “Each time a person passes by you and you say ‘hello’, imagine that person turning into a candle. The more positivity, love, and light you reflect, the more light is mirrored your way.”
— Suzy Kassem
Tuesday -I Promise To Chain
Students will make an I Promise call to action. Invite students to make a link on the chain by writing an action they’ll take to ensure students don’t feel isolated, excluded, or rejected.
Quote: “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”
— Malala Yousafzai
Wear Green Wednesday
Wear green today as a symbol of unity and solidarity with Sandy Hook Promise. Green is the Sandy Hook Elementary School color and a symbolic color of change. By wearing green today, your community is making a promise to Start With Hello
Quote: “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
— Howard Zinn
Thursday - Give & Take What You Need

Community Connections
East Hampton Walk of Hope
We are proud to support the East Hampton Walk of Hope on Thursday, October 10th. Representatives from the Interact Club will be at our Open House with a Luminaria Creation Station to support the cause.
Community members can donate and create a luminaria for $5 or make a donation of any amount at: https://danafarber.jimmyfund.org/site/TR?fr_id=1200&pg=team&team_id=29597
Junior Firefighters
We are honored to support the cause, please read the note below from Mr. Jim Burke Public Information Officer, Jr. Firefighter Division Advisor, Emergency Medical Services Coordinator & East Hampton Volunteer Fire Department Member:
Attached please find the completed application for a permit to utilize your building for this evening’s Junior Firefighter Division event commemorating the actions of the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives trying to save their fellow New Yorkers on 9/11.
The Fire Service is a tradition-bound brotherhood/sisterhood that places a very high value on honoring those who came before us, especially those who sacrificed it all in the line of duty. As I mentioned during our previous conversation, most (if not all) of the 12 current members of the EHVFD’s Junior Firefighter Division were walking the hallowed halls of Center School just a very few years ago and I am pleased to report that the concept for this event came from within this group themselves. You guys have done an outstanding job preparing these young men and women for the future not only academically, but also as caring and empathetic human beings who are striving to give as much as they can back to their community. Good work!

i-Ready
Each year the East Hampton Public Schools administers the i-Ready Diagnostic in Reading and Math in the fall, winter, and spring to monitor student growth and performance. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning. These results are reviewed as one data point amongst other assessments, observations and data regarding student performance. The assessment is integrated into your child’s day as part of their academic learning and is paced to ensure that they work on the assessment in small chunks of time. The implementation of this assessment is completed in accordance with Connecticut State Department of Education guidelines. I-Ready will begin the week of September 9th.
The i-Ready Diagnostic will provide results that help our team identify your child’s strengths and determine next steps for instruction. All students in grades 1-5 will have access to i-Ready Instruction upon completion of the Diagnostic. i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn. We will provide additional information about access to i-Ready Instruction and the frequency of use for that program once the Diagnostic is completed.
Be Ready for i-Ready!
Center School Handbook
A digital sign-off for the Family Handbook & Acceptable Use of Technology will be in a separate ParentSquare post on Monday.
Attendance Matters!
If a student has four unexcused absences in one month or 10 unexcused absences in a year they are classified as truant. If a child misses 18 or more days in a school year – excused or unexcused absences – the student is classified as chronically absent.
Access to the East Hampton attendance policy is available HERE
Email process for reporting an absence:
To increase the ease of reporting an absence and documenting parent approval of the absence for a student’s first 9 absences, the East Hampton Public Schools has created email addresses that parents can use to contact their student’s school and report an absence. Effectively immediately, the following email addresses can be used by parents to report and document their approval of an absence:
- Memorial_Attendance@easthamptonct.org
- Center_Attendance@easthamptonct.org
- EHMS_Attendance@easthamptonct.org
- EHHS_Attendance@easthamptonct.org
If you have successfully emailed the school, you will receive an autoreply that notifies you that the absence communication has been received and recorded. This process is effective for your student’s first 9 absences. After your student has more than 9 absences, additional documentation or communication will be required to excuse the absence. Please use the email to continue to notify the school that your child will not attend. You may call your child’s school at any time to report an absence, as well.
