Newsletter Week 8 Term 4
St Joseph's School Waipukurau 8th December 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou
A very warm welcome to week 8. On Sunday we celebrated the second Sunday of Advent. On Monday we lit the Second Advent Candle which represents PEACE.
Congratulations!
This year JD Mananes and Riley Winchester took part in the CHB Sports Academy Congratulations to you both on winning a scholarship of $100 each. They were two of the 4 students selected to receive this.
Last week Room 5 went to Napier for the day. We went to the aquarium (penguins are always very cute), Napier museum of Technology ( I really enjoyed the interactive nature of the museum and I think we are all expert bell ringers now), had Mcdonalds for lunch and watched the movie “A Boy Called Christmas'' (this is a great family movie). A very big thank you to the parents who transported the students. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our beach trip as the weather was not the best, but we still had a BBQ lunch and fresh strawberries, icing sugar, and créme fraîche. Please see the photos below.
On Monday the 6th of December the Year 8 students took part in a retreat. Murray Adams from the Palmerston North Diocese ran the day and Father Paul will also support the day's activities. Miss Girvan and I also took part in some of the activities. We all had a lovely day celebrating the time each Year 8 has spent at St Joseph’s School, the legacy they leave behind and their hopes and dreams for the future.
Hopefully, we get some sunshine over the remaining few days of school so that we can use the school pool is now up and running so on nice warm days teachers will be able to take the students swimming so please bring your togs to school each day and if the weather is nice you’ll be able to go for a swim.
This evening we have our Year 8 leavers mass due to the COVID restrictions only the year 7 students will be able to sing farewell to the Year 8's at the mass. Following the Mass the Year 8’s, their parents and staff will celebrate with a leavers dinner.
Prize Giving 2021
Unfortunately due to the restrictions around Level 2 COVID and the vaccination mandate we have had to make the hard decision to hold our End of Year Prize Giving with students and staff only. Therefore, we will have the Prizegiving on Wednesday the 15th of December at 1.30 pm in the Church. We will be live-streaming the Prizegiving. Please keep an eye out for the link which we will send out closer to the time.
Kia pai tō rā (Have a good day)

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:
Vaccinations for children aged five to 11-years-old
Independent safety regulator Medsafe is currently considering an application to use a child version of the Pfizer vaccine for five to 11-year-olds. We can expect a decision in mid-December.
Pending the decision made by Medsafe, Cabinet may be in a position to consider vaccinations for children before Christmas.
Health officials are therefore planning for a rollout starting early next year. Although timing has not been decided, it is expected it would begin before the end of January.
Current plans are to use the existing health sector infrastructure such as GPs, pharmacies, and vaccination clinics, as well as working with iwi, DHBs, local providers, communities, and the Ministry of Education to ensure a whānau-based approach.
Children and tamariki under 12 years old can only be vaccinated with the consent of their parent or caregiver. We encourage whānau to discuss vaccination so that everyone understands the decision they are making.
