Student Led Conferences February 9th!
Star Student
Monday: Send in 10-12 pictures for the students to share with the class.
Friday: Students will read a book aloud to the class and they may bring an item for Show and Tell.
Put Your Heart Into Reading
The students are excited about our 15th Annual Put Your Heart Into Reading event! There are TWO BIG parts to help with:
1. Help your child choose 2 books that they can read in under 15 minutes.
2. Help them design and decorate a Valentine's Box that represents an element in one of their books. For example, if your child chose to read a book about baseball, then they might make a box that looks like a giant baseball. :)
*Please see the letter that came home in this week's Friday Folder for specific details.
*Check out Pinterest and http://www.simplykinder.com/valentines-box-family-project/ for ideas!

LEAD 2021
1. Skilled Problem Solvers
- Ask effective questions to seek knowledge and construct meaning
- Utilize organizational skills to set goals and create plans
- Take risks with flexibility and tenacity, exhibiting an independent work ethic, applying a variety of strategies, and following through with perseverance
- Use literacy skills flexibly, including numerical and technological literacy
- Leverage their strengths in tandem with a global viewpoint to see problems from multiple perspectives, access and assemble resources to build consensus, and work within and support collaborative decision making
Students who are skilled problem-solvers will transfer knowledge and skills, including an understanding that failure is not defeat and the ability to construct and justify solutions based on available data, to many different situations. Skilled problem solvers generate their own questions and multiple pathways to solutions.
A teacher who creates skilled problem solvers will design and provide a variety of differentiated learning experiences that foster flexible thinking, incremental growth, and generalization of learning in an environment where failure is seen as a natural part of the learning process.
A parent of a skilled problem solver will instill the value of problem solving by serving as a resource who offers suggestions and acts as a sounding board, recognizing that there is more than one solution to most problems.

Art Contest
GCISD students of all ages are invited to create artwork illustrating the fun learning opportunities available through GCISD’s Summer Enrichment Program. This year’s theme is “Rockin' Through the Summer.” The winning artwork will serve as the cover design for the GCISD Summer Enrichment brochure, which will be posted on the website and provides information about registration and summer learning opportunities for students completing K-6th grades. Winning artwork will also be used to promote the Summer Enrichment Program through social media. The student who creates the winning entry will be recognized in the brochure and during a regular meeting of the GCISD Board of Trustees.
Art must be original and can be hand-drawn, painted, computer-designed or in any other medium. Judges will be looking for a design that is creative, appropriate and uses the “Rockin' Through the Summer” theme. Art should be on 8 ½” x 11” paper and submitted in color, but be able to be reproduced in black and white. Student's full name, school, grade and teacher's name should be on the BACK of the artwork. Please do not frame or mat entry to any size larger than 8 ½” x 11”. Our contest opened January 9, 2017, and the deadline for submitting the art is Friday, February 10th.
