March 21, 2024 -- Eleven Columbus City Schools have been honored by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce and Director Stephen Dackin for their exceptional progress and student growth on the latest Ohio State Report Card.
These schools are among 310 statewide, including 38 in Franklin County, to receive the prestigious Momentum Award this week. The Momentum Award recognizes districts and school buildings that have exceeded expectations by demonstrating outstanding achievement improvement while continuing to show student growth throughout the year.
The awarded schools are:
- Binns Elementary
- Cedarwood Alternative Elementary
- Columbus Africentric Early College Elementary
- Como Elementary
- Huy/A.G. Bell Elementary
- Indian Springs Elementary
- Northgate Intermediate
- South Mifflin STEM Academy (K-8)

"I'm proud that these schools are being recognized for the hard work they do every day to improve student outcomes,” said Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman. “Demonstrating year-to-year growth instills pride and determination in our academic community as we pursue excellence. Their commitment to continuous improvement serves as a beacon of inspiration among their peers statewide, encouraging us all to strive for more outstanding excellence in our educational pursuits."
Districts and buildings earn the Momentum Award by improving their performance index by three or more points from the 2021-2022 report card to the 2022-2023 report card and achieving a value-added progress rating of 4 or more stars. It's important to note that districts and buildings are not eligible for this award if they have received an overall rating of 5 stars.
Dr. Corey D. Grubbs, Columbus City Schools Chief of Transformation and Leadership, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to see tangible proof that our endeavors to enhance school standards are yielding results, showcasing the remarkable strides our students are taking in their learning journey. This achievement is a testament to our students, faculty, administrators, and families' relentless dedication and effort. It's a monumental milestone, underscoring our collective commitment to excellence."

SUPERINTENDENT/CEO DR. ANGELA CHAPMAN
Dear Columbus City Schools Families,
As we continue our journey towards reimagining the educational landscape within Columbus City Schools, I am pleased to provide you with an update on the progress of the Superintendent's Community Facilities Task Force, highlighting its alignment with the District's vision and mission.
We're charting a course toward a future where our students emerge as Portrait-ready graduates, fully unleashing their potential. This vision necessitates adaptability, effective communication, boundless creativity, sharp critical thinking, global empathy, and fluency in technology. It serves as our guiding light, our unwavering North Star.
Established per Board policy 7105, the Task Force, comprised of 28 internal and external participants approved by the Board of Education, began its essential work on February 6, 2024. Since then, it has diligently evaluated data-driven insights and engaged comprehensively with the community to create recommendations regarding potential school closures or consolidations.
Most importantly, the Task Force has yet to select any schools or administrative buildings for closure or consolidation.
To reiterate, the Task Force reviews criteria, analyzes data and engages stakeholders in its recommendations. Here is a summary of the work accomplished thus far:
Timeline: The Task Force commenced its activities on February 13 and will continue meeting twice monthly until June. Final recommendations will be presented to the Columbus Board of Education by the middle of June, with anticipated implementation by the 2025-2026 school year.
Task Force Meeting Highlights:
- Five meetings have taken place since February 6.
- The first meeting introduced Task Force members and established a webpage to house all relevant information.
- The second meeting saw the transition of leadership to co-chairs, the establishment of meeting norms, and engagement with the community through a survey of K through eight and high school students and adults.
- The third meeting reviewed the first Task Force Survey results, garnered over 4,000 responses, and discussed critical considerations for students and adults.
- Key takeaways: The survey, which received responses from 4,000 participants, comprised 1,000 K through 8 students, 200 high school students, and over 2,000 adults. Critical considerations for students included safety and transportation, accessibility, building age and condition, and diversity.
- Adults echoed concerns about safety, transportation, building capacity, age and condition, accessibility, and educational programs. Notably, safety, transportation, and building age and condition emerged as shared priorities for both groups.
- The Task Force incorporated community voice, which is the input of both students and adults. The task force thoroughly reviewed interactive dashboards featuring filters for student enrollment, building utilization, conditions, and transfer rates. These dashboards are accessible to the public on the District’s website, precisely the Community Facilities Task Force page.
- The fourth meeting focused on reviewing interactive dashboards and initiating the Engagement Plan to ensure community involvement.
- The fifth meeting focused on criteria review and interactive simulations.
- Click HERE for a Task Force Meeting Recap.
Next Steps:
- The Task Force is currently conducting a second round of criteria review.
- On May 7, the Superintendent/CEO and the Community Task Force Co-Chairs will present the work group's initial recommendations to the Columbus Board of Education during its regular business meeting.
- During May, the District will further engage the community in Community Forums, conduct an additional survey, and host gallery walks to obtain input. The Task Force anticipates submitting its final recommendations to the Board of Education in June for consideration.
The Superintendent's Community Facilities Task Force's work aligns with our District's vision and mission.
Our vision is to create a world-class model of public education that prepares all students to be Portrait-ready graduates and reach their full potential. The Task Force's efforts to ensure equitable access to quality facilities support this vision by providing students with the environments they need to thrive. Furthermore, the Task Force's commitment to data-driven decision-making and comprehensive community engagement upholds our mission, which aims to ensure each student is highly educated, prepared for leadership and service, and empowered for success as a citizen in a global community.
For more information and updates on the Superintendent's Community Facilities Task Force, please visit the Columbus City Schools website at ccsoh.us.
Please know that your input and engagement are invaluable as we strive to enhance the educational experience for all students within our District.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in this critical endeavor.
Respectfully,
Superintendent/CEO Dr. Angela Chapman

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program provides housing assistance for very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled, allowing them to live in safe, quality affordable housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses or apartments in neighborhoods of their choice. Participants are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
A family that is issued a voucher is responsible for finding a suitable unit where the owner agrees to rent under the HCV program. The suitable unit may even include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by CMHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

Parent Engagement Opportunity's in Schools
Parental involvement during the elementary years is vital in helping children attain academic success. Parent involvement tends to peak while the children are in the elementary school. The research also shows that the earlier parental involvement begins in a child's educational process, the more powerful the effects will be. Educators frequently point out the critical role of the home and family environment in determining a child's school success. It appears that the earlier this influence is instilled, the greater the likelihood of higher student achievement. There appears to be a relationship between the age of the child and the forms of parental involvement. Greater efforts to involve parents are seen at the preschool and primary levels. Efforts here focus on assisting in the classroom and reading to children at home.
Parental involvement at the elementary level requires work, dedication, and commitment from all parties involved. While some parents of grade-school level students may feel that "involvement" stops at bringing the children to and from school, those parents who immerse themselves in their child's education know that they must go much further. At the elementary level, using learning activities in the home helps promote academic skills. Students at this age level need the constant reinforcement of rudimentary skills to promote higher learning. Although children spend the bulk of their day at school learning to read and conceptualizing their thoughts with their teacher, learning should go beyond the classroom.
Knowing that parent involvement is vital to student success, Northgate Intermediate works with a school ’s Family Ambassador (formally known as Parent Consultant) in the building to improve parent involvement. The Family Ambassador’s main goals are to work collaboratively with other parents, principal, counselor and staff to develop parent engagement activities as well as being a liaison for you (the parent) to communicate strategies and ideas to improve the overall climate of the school. Ms. Skipper (Northgate’s Family Ambassador) is at the building Tuesday-Thursday and can be reached at 614-365-8815 if you have ideas, questions or concerns.
