WELCOME TO FEBRUARY, BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
Hello DCP-Redford Families,
Wow! We are already in the month of February!
February is one of the most celebrated and dedicated time of the year. We honor and celebrate the history, and culture of African Americans. BHM also serves as a reminder of contributions and achievements that a significant amount of Black individuals accomplished throughout the years. In addition, it also serves as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness surrounding social justice and racial equality.
Join us as we foster a more diverse environment while promoting respect, empathy and understanding throughout the community. Spread kindness, compassion, and unity not just today, but everyday to everyone.
Sincerely,
Principal Johnson

DCP-REDFORD CAMPUS SAFETY🦺
SAFE SCHOOL NOTICE
All Visitors must sign in at the main office with VALID IDENTIFICATION ( Driver License, State I.D, Passport, Military I.D etc.) when visiting or picking up a student. If any doubt, a telephone call will be made by Administration to confirm your identity before allowing access to the student.
Safe Driving Reminder
Please be mindful of the cars and busses in the car drop-off and pick up line during morning entry and dismissal. The parking lot is designed for cars to drive to the left of the lot and circle around. Driving the opposite direction is dangerous and puts too many people in harm's way. When everyone follows the same path, entry and dismissal can move efficiently. We want everyone to arrive and leave safely. Most importantly, we want to keep our children safe. Also, we ask that our visitors do not block the gym door or the main entrance door with your vehicles. This is a FIRE HAZARD. Please utilize the parking spaces to ensure everyone's safety. Thank you for understanding.
EARLY PICK-UP REMINDER
Early pick-ups not only cause disruption of the flow of the building. However, it hinders your scholar’s academic progression because they will miss important instruction. To prevent the loss of instructional time, early pick up will end at 3:00 P.M. No entry will be permitted after this time as we prepare our scholars for dismissal. Scholars will be released to the parents in the pick-up line at 3:30 pm. Walkers will be released at 3:30 pm.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Problems and situations alway occur in the classroom. Most of the time there are 3 sides: the teacher’s side, the scholar’s side and the truth. I encourage each of you to reach out to your child’s teacher FIRST to solve the problem. If they don’t respond or if the result is less than satisfactory, then contact the office. If you come to the office first, Admin will go to the scholar first for questioning and then teacher for their perspective. That takes time. If you go directly to the teacher involved, it will most likely give you an answer much quicker. This helps in building a relationship of trust between you and the teacher. They are with your scholars for longer periods of time than anyone in the office. You will probably have your concerns addressed much quicker than calling the office first. A staff directory can be found down below in our Parent Newsletter.
📩CONTACTING YOUR SCHOLAR'S TEACHER
In an effort to minimize disruption of instructional time, schedule meetings, or simply check in with your scholars instructor, we encourage you to reach out to your scholars Instructor directly by way of email to avoid interruption of instructional time.

SEPARATE IS NEVER EQUAL
SEPARATE IS NEVER EQUAL By: Duncan Tonatiuh

Seven years before Brown v. Board of Education, the Mendez family fought to end segregation in California schools.
When her family moved to the town of Westminster, California, young Sylvia Mendez was excited about enrolling in her neighborhood school. But she and her brothers were turned away and told they had to attend the Mexican school instead. Sylvia could not understand why—she was an American citizen who spoke perfect English. Why were the children of Mexican families forced to attend a separate school?
Unable to get a satisfactory answer from the school board, the Mendez family decided to take matters into its own hands and organized a lawsuit. In the end, the Mendez family’s efforts helped bring an end to segregated schooling in California in 1947, seven years before the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education ended segregation in schools across America.
THE STARS BENEATH OUR FEET
The Stars Beneath our Feet By: David Barclay Moore
Recommended for ages: 10 - 13 years
A boy tries to steer a safe path through the projects in Harlem in the wake of his brother’s death in this outstanding debut novel that celebrates community and creativity.
It’s Christmas Eve in Harlem, but twelve-year-old Lolly Rachpaul and his mom aren’t celebrating. They’re still reeling from his older brother’s death in a gang-related shooting just a few months earlier. Then Lolly’s mother’s girlfriend brings him a gift that will change everything: two enormous bags filled with Legos. Lolly’s always loved Legos, and he prides himself on following the kit instructions exactly. Now, faced with a pile of building blocks and no instructions, Lolly must find his own way forward.
His path isn’t clear—and the pressure to join a “crew,” as his brother did, is always there. When Lolly and his friend are beaten up and robbed, joining a crew almost seems like the safe choice. But building a fantastical Lego city at the community center provides Lolly with an escape—and an unexpected bridge back to the world.

Making Black America: Through the Grapevine
MAKING BLACK AMERICA: THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE is a four-part series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. which chronicles the vast networks and organizations created by and for Black people. The series explores the extraordinary world that showcased Black people’s ability to collectively prosper, defy white supremacy and define Blackness in ways that transformed America itself.
Excluded from white society on so many fronts, African Americans in the long years from slavery to desegregation constructed their own society and, in doing so, established networks that resisted, and eventually toppled, Jim Crow, while giving birth to new cultural forms that transformed world culture, from literature to jazz. Throughout the series, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. inverts the standard narrative of history as a battleground over the repressive, violent forces of white supremacy and of African Americans making “progress” by crossing the color line, and instead center the arc on the private and communal lives of those who, trapped by Jim Crow rule, nevertheless created a diverse, and vibrant, world of their own.
