Curriculum & Instruction
"Out of My Mind" - Nanuet Golden Spotlight
A. MacArthur Barr Middle School Principal Mrs. O'Sullivan said it best when she wrote the following to her teachers:
I thank each of you for your willingness to embrace the Science of Reading, try new things, share your thoughts, passions and strengths to not only create rich meaningful learning experiences for our children, but to support the professional learning of each other.
This unit, along with the other inclusion work being done in the building over the past few weeks, is having an impact on our students! When doing work like this, one always hopes it will create a spark within students so they are motivated to move forward with open minds and hearts, seeking ways to show empathy, kindness and inclusivity to all. Based on what I observed in the 5th grade classrooms, I believe that spark has been ignited, thanks to all of you!
This unit was a true representation of the integration of Social Emotional Learning benchmarks within academic curriculum, with connections to real world experiences. This type of learning has a profound impact on everyone.
Special thank you to Lauren Domitrovits, our Reading Specialist, ELA, and Social Studies Facilitator and the 5th grade team with their vision and implementation for this amazingly memorable adventure and to Jonathan Clark, our talented Public Information Specialist and his team for putting this video together.
The Winter "Blues"
Kayleen, Sasha, Keziah, Saanvi, Arooj and Katie put the finishing touches on their 7th Grade Blues project. Written and composed by students themselves, the Blues project teaches about the American history of the Blues art form and how the structure and unique form of the Blues can become part of one's own unique experience.
To Fiction or Not to Fiction
Our 5th graders have been visiting the library to explore ways to read and analyze nonfiction! These students collaborated to design a movie poster about Amelia Earhart at one of the six nonfiction stations.
Healing: Cells & Systems Reinforcement
Students participated in an interactive reinforcement lesson about our 7th grade unit Healing: Cells & Systems. Students independently responded to question prompts on mini white boards. Once everyone had a chance to think, they discussed answers to ensure each person has a good understanding.
Biography Based Non-Fiction Lesson
5th Grade students are currently immersed in learning all about nonfiction text. Students are practicing understanding and utilizing nonfiction text features to better make meaning and develop their understanding. During this unit, students participated in stations in the library to practice these skills and better hone their understanding of using nonfiction features to make meaning of information regarding prominent historical figures. All stations were biography-based and highly engaging!
Joining Forces

Community Events & Outreach
2025 Penguin Plunge
The Nanuet Black and Gold Club and the Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse are teaming up to help support the 2025 Penguin Plunge! On March 2nd 2025, we'll be diving into the icy waters of the Hudson River to show our support for families with critically ill children.
The Penguin Plunge is a registered not-for-profit 501(c)(3) located in Rockland County, NY that works to help the families of seriously ill children meet their medical and support costs as they focus on their children’s health. Since our founding in 2007, the Penguin Plunge has proudly raised over $1,000,000 and supported 40 critically ill children and their families from Rockland and Bergen counties. Our annual plunge into the icy Hudson River at Nyack Memorial Park represents the culmination of nearly a year-long fundraising effort for the year’s families, and has become a hallmark of community spirit and generosity. This year, we are celebrating our 18th Annual Plunge and braving the cold for three local families whose children are struggling with serious medical conditions.
We give 100% of our donations to the families we support. This year, your money will go towards the families of Brielle Gaine, Luke Garrecht, and Zach Dolinsky. You can read their stories here and donate below!
