As many of you are aware, we have a lot of building work happening at school right now including a lovely new staff car park which is coming along nicely. It is timely to remind all of our school community to be mindful of vehicles that may be moving in or out of the school grounds.
We would like to thank all of those that were able to attend the Student Led Conferences this week. This is always a great opportunity to strengthen the connections between the school and home. All conversations are important and we value your time taken to come and have these conversations.
Attendance
Attendance and engagement at school continues to be a major focus for the Ministry of Education (MOE). The MOE want all tamariki attending school 90% or more of the time.
The MOE have defined the following:
Any student who is attending less than 90% is considered an attendance concern.
Students who have an attendance rate between 80-90% are considered to be irregularly absent.
Students who have an attendance rate between 70-80% are considered to be moderately absent.
Students who have an attendance rate below 70% are considered to be chronically absent.
We have summarised our school attendance data for Terms 1 and 2:
Term 1
Attending 90% or more of the time - 66%
Attending 80% - 90% of the time - 23%
Attending below 70% - 80% of the time - 7%
Attending below 70% of the time - 4%
Term 2
Attending 90% or more of the time - 53%
Attending 80% - 90% of the time - 30%
Attending below 70% - 80% of the time - 9%
Attending below 70% of the time - 8%
The Ministry of Education have put in attendance targets for 2024:
Attending 90% or more of the time - 70%
Attending 80% - 90% of the time - 19%
Attending 70% - 80% of the time - 6%
Attending below 70% or less of the time - 5%
When you look at your child's 2023 mid year report the attendance summary for your child. Our goal is for a child to miss no more than 5 days of school per term. If a child is sick, then goes on holiday, has a couple of days at home etc it soon adds up to a surprising amount of absences.
Starting this term we will be notifying families when attendance drops below 90%. In the majority of cases our school absences are explained and justified. However we will be proactive in letting families know when attendance starts to drop just to keep you aware and informed. We have already started having discussions with whānau of tamariki whose absence is below 90% for Terms 1 and 2 just to see how we can understand and help where required.
In our next newsletter we will explain the codes and the difference between justified and unjustified absences.

Ikura / Manaakitia te whare Tangata
We are delighted to share that Inglewood Primary School are participating in the Ikura | Manaakitia te whare tangata - period products in schools initiative.
Ikura (periods) are a fact of life for half the population. Through this initiative, the Ministry of Education is providing period products (pads and tampons) to support students in managing their ikura. We will have products available for students to use at school and to take home.
We hope that providing access to period products will help to reduce barriers to accessing education.
For more information on the initiative, please visit: Ministry of Education - Ikura initiative.
