SUMMER TERM - 23RD MAY 2024
Message from the Head of School
As we come to the end of the first half of summer term I would like to say a big thank you for all your continued support. We are so lucky to have such an engaged community who care so much about their children’s education.
Children in EYFS have really enjoyed DUG week where they have had Dad’s, Uncle’s and Grandad’s coming into their classroom and joining them in their learning.
We have lots to look forward to in the final half term of the year. Thank you to those who have volunteered to speak to our children during Aspirations week which is 10th of June. We have been inundated with volunteers, thank you!
Y1 phonics screening takes place the same week. The children have been working really hard and we are really proud of them. We would appreciate you spending some time over half term reading some real and alien words. There are resources on the home learning site.
On Friday 14th June we are inviting children to come in dressed as what they would like to be when they are older e.g. an astronaut or doctor.
Thank you to all of the parent reps who attended our meeting last week, it was really productive and you will receive the minutes. After feedback from some parents we will try to send non urgent communication at the end of the school day rather than during the day.
After half term, we are very excited to be launching our new parent communication and payments system across the partnership, Arbor. This will replace both ParentHub for communication from the school and ParentPay for making payments, bringing all of this and more into one app. Further information will be sent out after half term but please ensure that when you receive a welcome email from Arbor, you sign up promptly to ensure that you don't miss important communication from the school. Once we have launched Arbor we will no longer be using either ParentHub or ParentPay.
Please remember tomorrow is an INSET day across HPP. Have a lovely half term.

🟨 Nursery
This week we have had another busy and exciting week! We have continued to learn about traditional tales and loved listening to the story 'Jack and the beanstalk'. We have been building our own beanstalks in the block area and maths area, we have enjoyed painting the characters from the story and using puppets to retell the story too.
We have enjoyed DUG week which was something different for us all in nursery to. We loved having Dads, Uncles and Grandpas in school. We showed them our nursery and played games, went on a beanstalk number hunt, made beanstalks in the creative area and maths area and enjoyed playing in the garden too. We painted together and we were careful to not get paint on our adults.
In PE we have continued to learn how to travel using different equipment making sure we are safe as we do so.
We have loved taking care of the caterpillars over the last few weeks. It has been fascinating watching them grow bigger by the day. We were so excited when they transformed into a chrysalis and waited for what felt like forever for them to emerge as beautiful butterflies. We fed them some sugary water and some chopped up fruit and once their wings were dry and they were strong enough we released them into our Nursery garden. We watched them fly off and cannot wait for them to return one day to lay eggs and start the life cycle all over again. Such a happy week for us all!
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been reading the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk' this week and we have been talking about what plants need to grow and thrive. At home please talk about what plants need to grow. Can you identify key features together?
🟥 Reception
This week Reception have welcomed Dad's, Uncle's and Grandads in to celebrate DUG week. The children loved showing their grown ups around the classroom and had lots of fun!
We have been reading the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' We played a game of 'knock, knock, what's in the box?' We had to use the clues to work out which story we were learning about. We also talked about the magic beans and came up with some very exciting ideas about if we had some magic beans, what we would wish they would grow into. We had cake trees, chocolate trees and trees with kittens on them! We also talked about the giant and used lots of different resources to measure his giant footprints.
In Maths, we have been continuing our learning on doubling. We have been starting to use our doubling facts to write number sentences. We have been playing games with dice to see if we can roll doubles and using paint to make some doubling butterflies.
In Phonics this week, we have been continuing to practise all of our sounds. We have been looking at pictures and trying to use our phonic knowledge to sound out the word in the pictures and write them down.
Reception were very excited to release their butterflies out into the garden. We had lots of fun watching them grow and hope they come back to lay their eggs soon!

🟦 Year 1
This week, year 1 took a trip to the local library in Hampton. A huge ‘thank you’ to all those parents who kindly gave up their time to accompany us on this visit – our walk to the library wouldn’t have happened without you, so we greatly appreciate your support. We had great fun at the library, learning all about the building, it’s history, how many books we are allowed to borrow, as well as how we can join. We were shown how to search for particular books we are interested in before listening to a story. We then enjoyed some free time to peruse the books and share them with our friends and grown-ups. We had a wonderful time exploring all the different books and genres.
This week, we have continued using our focus text ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and Jude Daly to write our own setting descriptions. We used our booklet of noun phrases that we compiled last week to write descriptive sentences to describe what Lila might see, feel and hear as she went on her journey.
In Maths, we have continued looking at the concept of multiplication and division, focusing this week on making equal groups, both by sharing and grouping. We have been working with concrete objects to physically move items to make groups and share, before moving onto pictorially representing these and finally working abstractly with numbers.
In design and technology, we have been completing our puppet work, adding features to our designs and sewing them together. We are really proud of our work and love our finished products.
We have been practising our throwing and catching skills in PE this week, looking at how increasing the swing of our arm can help us to throw further. We also learnt that if we keep our eye on the ball, and adjust our body so that it is line the ball, this helps our dribbling and receiving skills.
🟩 Year 2
Year 2 were so excited to become explorers for the day on Wednesday. We loved dressing up as jungle explorers as we spent the day thinking about who explorers are and what they might do.
Our teachers set our design brief for the day challenging us to design and build a jungle jeep ready to rescue an injured tiger. We discussed what the jeep might need to have and thought about how the axel and wheels work to drive the jeep as well as needing a steering wheel to steer. As we designed our jeep we also thought carefully about how to camouflage our jeep in the jungle and how we could attach a secure cage to safely transport our injured tiger.
After planning we set to work to build our jeep. We created the chassis of our jeep and worked with adults to carefully saw rods to create our axel before attaching our wheels. Once the model jeep was built, we were able to add our additional features such as a bumper, a spare wheel, radio equipment and of course our secure cage for the tiger.
We had such a wonderful DT day, our teachers were so impressed with our imagination and creativity, we hope you enjoy our creations as much as we do.
