Thank you to all that joined us for summer professional learning! Although we have provided both face-to-face and virtual options, we have enjoyed "seeing" you in any format! We are always honored to learn and grow with you. Over 2200 participants joined us this summer in professional learning opportunities, and we hope to see more this fall. We know that this fall presents many challenges as you return to school. However, we are confident that the educators of Alabama will succeed! 2021-2022 Regional In-Service Center Statewide Needs Assessment: We want to hear from you!
2021-2022 Statewide RIC Needs Assessment: The voices and opinions of teachers and administrators are crucial to this process; therefore, we need your help!
The Regional Inservice Centers want to provide quality and relevant professional learning for all educators across the state. 11th Annual Tech Meet Tuscaloosa: August 2, 2021
West Alabama Regional Counselors' Conference: Survey for Region 4 Counselors
We are excited to announce that the 2nd Annual West Alabama Regional School Counselors' Conference will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 at the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy.
In order to best prepare for the needs of school counselors, we ask all counselors within our region to complete the following survey by August 31.
Alabama Best Practices Center: Powerful Conversations Network (PCN) West and Key Leaders Network (KLN) West
The UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center will host the following two networks from the Alabama Best Practices Center:
- Powerful Conversations Network (PCN)
- Text: New Art and Science of Teaching by Robert Marzano and colleagues
- Teachers will meet in grade bands and/or subject areas planning and identifying lessons for the essential standards.
- Key Leaders Network (KLN)
- Text: High Reliability Schools by Robert Marzano and colleagues
- This year, KLN will connect leaders to strategies that strengthen district and school cultures as they address the challenges caused by the pandemic.
The first training session will be held virtually; other sessions are planned as face-to-face.

Principals Leading Instructional Transformation
Training Goal
Evaluate the current district support system to prioritize and strengthen district level supports for principals who are leading instructional transformation.
Structure

· Training Participants - up to 3 District Support Team members who commit to all four sessions (1 of the 3 participants is the superintendent or designee).
***4 Virtual Sessions (3 to 3.5 hrs. each) with an intersession period (4-5 weeks between each virtual session)

Registration Closes September 6: Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
To register, please use the following link in PowerSchool. Space is limited! If you teach within the UA/UWA In-Service Center region, your registration fee will be paid for this opportunity.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders. The facilitator, Daniel Cohen, PhD, is an assistant professor of school psychology at UA and is an expert in the provision of mental health supports in school settings. The training includes a self-paced module and a synchronous day-long remote training session.

Operation Success: The Role of the Mental Health Service Coordinator Training
- Overview: All LEAs awarded the funds for the MHSC are required to attend and additional social workers or MHSC that an LEA has hired in addition to the MHSC grant or non-grant funded LEAs who use ESSER funds to hire MHSC or social workers may also attend.
- Dates & Location: September 21-22, 2021, at Bryant Conference Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; 9:00 – 4:00 each day

UA/UWA Region 4 Curriculum Directors' PLC

- Virtual meeting via Zoom
- This year, we will host 3 meetings with the curriculum directors/professional learning directors who serve as direct liaisons to the In-Service Center.
- Each of these regional meetings, beginning with September 24, will occur 2-3 weeks after the ALSDE's Curriculum and Instruction meetings. The purpose of this timing is so that we may discuss specific updates, data, and requests for support based upon the information shared at the ALSDE meetings. We will share ideas and network to share best practices within our region.
Inaugural Alabama-Georgia Middle Level Conference: September 24-25
The first ever virtual joint Alabama-Georgia Middle Level Education Conference is based on the fifth edition of AMLE's position paper, The Successful Middle School: This We Believe. The conference will support middle level educators at all stages of their career who want to learn more about how to support the attributes and characteristics that define successful middle schools, teachers, and students.
The conference features educators and school leaders from across Alabama and Georgia. We are also proud to host author and leader Robert Jackson as our keynote speaker along with other incredible featured speakers.
We will kick off the weekend Friday night (September 24) with a tailgate social hosted by Dru Tomlin, and rally together to tackle middle level education on Saturday (September 25) during our half-day conference.

Coffee and Conversation: Making Math Learning Richer by Increasing the Rigor
Join Kari Jurgenson on Tuesday, September 28 for this afterschool virtual session from 3:00-4:30 pm! Middle and high school math teachers will learn more about increasing the rigor of mathematical tasks in daily instruction.

ARI Region 4 Lunch and Learn Sessions
ARI Lunch and Learns for Administrators- As outlined in the Alabama Literacy Act (ALA), the ARI local and regional literacy specialists must be clear and intentional in working with the school administrators to create a strategic plan for coaching that includes coaching and mentoring teachers daily (p.10). This strategic plan for coaching will assist in a seamless transition to the 2021 Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts (ELA COS). Each Lunch and Learn will include time to explore a specific area of foundational reading from our 2021 ELA COS and support administrators in ensuring all educators in our buildings have a clear understanding of how the science of reading is explicitly incorporated to enable K-3 students to master grade-level content.

We are happy to be able to deliver labs to your school this year if you are one of our trained teachers. The process will look a little different this year than it has in the past. Mr. John Pointon will be our new delivery driver this year. Please be on the lookout to welcome him to your school.

If you are a new teacher needing ASIM training, please reach out to us directly via email, phone, and/or text.
Lab Safety
We are unable to provide printed safety contracts, but you will be required to have one on file for your students. You may use the Flinn Safety Contract (also available in Spanish) or a personal/district plan. Try paperless! Use your LMS platform and ask students and parents to sign digitally.

AMSTI
AMSTI has been busy providing professional learning to teachers in our region for math and science. We were excited to hold our first coaching academy to support building-based math coaches. We look forward to working with this great group of educators in our coaching communities this year.
We will hold two more virtual K-5 Math COS overview sessions on August 9.
