WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Attendance Matters!
The state of Arizona defines excessive absencess as 10% of a school year. As we operate on a 178 day school year, anything in excess of nine (9) days each semester would be considered excessive.
Therefore, beginning this semester, a student can only have nine (9) days marked as an “Excused” absence in each of their classes without administrative approval. This does not include school sponsored events, activities or appointments. Parents will begin to receive notifications at 3, 6 and 9 days of absences. If a student hits 10 absences, in order to have the absence excused, they will need to contact administration.
It is important that students understand the following:
- When a student has an “Unexcused” absence in a class period, a student may still be able to earn credit for missed and made up learning opportunities, but also may only receive partial credit or NO credit.
- Students will always be provided with the chance to make up missed learning opportunities. This does not necesarily mean that they will be receiving full credit.
- Students are expected to attend school each and every day, but we do understand that emergencies and illness occur. Please ensure that excused absences are communicated directly to the attendance line within no more than 24 hours.
- The natural consequence of accumulating excessive absences is that beginning with the 10th absence in a semester, they will ALL automatically be considered “Unexcused” moving forward per the state of Arizona.
- STUDENTS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO LOSE credit for making up missed work (learning opportunities) on these days. The more absences a student has accrued after the ninth (9th), the greater their potential for not passing the course and thus not earning credit.
Finally, parents will be receiving communication regarding their students’ attendance when their student/s hits 3, 6 & 9 absences via email. A phone dialer will be starting soon to inform parents of attendance markings for their student. Please keep in mind that Infinite Campus Parent Portal also provides real-time attendance for students and parents, in addition to grades.
Our Dorado Community is a partnership in setting the stage for students to succeed. We need your help to make sure that our students are in school every day that they can be. Together, we can open doors for our kiddos in the future!
Teen Maze for 10th Graders
Teen Maze is an interactive, 30-minute event focused on decision-making and the consequences of using drugs and alcohol.
Who is involved? The stations will be run by volunteers from the school and the community. Volunteers at each station will have a script that guides them through a discussion with the students, including a scenario and consequences, then discussing with the students how the decision affects them, their friends, and their family, what they could do differently, and how they could move on.
Why? To get students to think about decision-making, emphasizing non-fatal, unintended consequences of using alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. The goal is to educate teens, increase the perception of risk and harm of alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs, and change their behaviors around these substances.

Unified teams included athletes with disabilities and partners without disabilities competing alongside one another. Teams from Mountain View HS, Marana HS, and Palo Verde HS also participated. It was a great tournament to prepare all the teams for the area competition on February 17th at Sporting Chance. Let's come out and show our support for these amazing Dorados.
HOSA
HOSA is holding a food drive for the Arizona Community Food Bank from now until the end of February. Please help us help those that are in need.
HOSA is entering the competition phase of the year and will be holding the first round of testing next week. This is an opportunity for students to compete at the national level and network with peers and healthcare professionals from around the world.
HOSA will be taking students to the HOSA Region 4 Conference at Pima Medical Institute on February 16th to compete for a chance to go to the International Conference in the summer.
Congrats to a CDO student who was chosen to be a part of the Disney Dreamers Academy!
CDO Senior, Makena Dundon, was selected as 1 of the 100 outstanding high school students across the United States to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy in Walt Disney World. During this 5-day expense paid event, she will meet with industry mentors, attend career workshops, and develop skills to help her dreams of becoming a Disney Imagineer come true.
Makena’s picture was featured on the display at Times Square and on Good Morning America earlier this week!
Theatre
HUGE congratulations to advanced and symposium theatre classes. Over the weekend, they competed in Southern Arizona festival of theatre and EVERY SINGLE performer took home a superior. Our troupe received 6 awards total. So proud of all of your hard work!
Environmental Club
Environmental Club would like to thank everyone that came out to support the fundraiser night at Chipotle. It was a big success! We are looking for volunteers who have skill working with irrigation systems to help us fine tune the rain garden's irrigation. Please contact cpechuzal@amphi.com if you can help.
Academic Decathlon News
At the last scrimmage before the regional competition, the CDO Academic Decathlon team traveled to Basha High School to face 10 other teams in a very competitive contest. Led by strong performances by Kevin Neese and Julia Smith, CDO finished second, losing only to perennial powerhouse Hamilton High School. Winning awards were Kevin, Evan Lehner, Julia, Zoe Guymon, Austin Christian, Bella Stewart, Henry Anicker, and Spencer Hollings. The team also finished first in the Super Quiz Relay, the exciting public portion of the Academic Decathlon.
