1) [NEW] Illness Guidelines - From Nurse Fernald
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has released updated guidelines for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses to reflect the recently updated CDC guidance. Instead of guidance specific to testing positive for COVID-19, this updated information is for respiratory viruses like Influenza, RSV and COVID-19 as they share similar transmission methods, symptoms and prevention strategies.
Staying home to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses
There is no longer the requirement to stay home for 5 days if you test positive for COVID-19.
When you have ANY respiratory virus- stay home and away from others if you have respiratory virus symptoms. These symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose and headache.
Return to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
𐄂 Your symptoms are improving and,
𐄂 At least 24 hours have passed with no fever and without the
use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol and Motrin
2) [UPDATE] Cradles to Crayons Clothing Drive
New drop off times: Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2.
Za’Riah Caruthers, our 8th grade ambassador for Project 351, is asking for your help. For her service project she is partnering with Cradles to Crayons to run a clothing drive for communities around Massachusetts. This will take place March 25 - April 5.
**For parents-we will be having a drop off point for donating items in the back parking lot by the tennis courts on Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2. This will take place for morning drop off between 7:10AM - 7:35AM
Please look through your closets and consider donating clothing items to families in need. Our 8th grade ambassador is asking for you to donate any unused, like new, or new clothes. The clothing sizes must range from newborn to adult small/medium. If you would like to donate any underwear, socks, or pajamas they all must be new and in the packaging. Any clothes that have town names and/or other sport teams (other than New England teams) will not be accepted to Cradles to Crayons.
All donations will be put into bins that are located by the front office. If you don't have any clothes to donate, there is still a way for you to help. You can spread the word to your families and friends, so they can also help. Remember there is going to be a lasting impact on communities around the state if you donate.
3) [REMINDER] NEWSIES Jr.
Tickets are now on sale for Newsies Jr.! Shows are Thursday 4/4 at 7pm, Friday 4/5 at 7pm, and Saturday 4/6 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $10 per ticket plus fees with reserved seating. We will also be livestreaming the Friday 4/5 at 7pm show for people who are unable to physically attend.

Our Wednesday 4/3 Dress Rehearsal is also open for teachers to attend. No need to buy a ticket - just stop by and find any seat! We will be starting around 3pm.
Thanks and let me Ms. Tatar know if you have any questions!
4) [REMINDER] Eclipse Viewing Party
As you know, Monday, April 8, 2024 will be a near total eclipse in Bedford right after school. We will be providing viewing glasses to all students that day and BHS and JGMS are hosting a combined viewing party. At the party, we will use our solar eclipse viewing glasses and make pinhole cameras and play games while we watch the moon pass in front of the sun causing near complete darkness in the middle of the day. The timing is great because we expect to have the near totality event around 3:30pm and the late bus will take students home at 4:05. Please consider allowing your child to stay and make arrangements for pick up if needed.
Please note: This is part of an extended school day. Similar to students staying with a teacher for extra help, we expect families will communicate the afternoon plans including how they will get home or where they will be picked up and the late bus be an option for many as usual. If it rains or is cloudy we will cancel the event and we will communicate. The rain date for this event is on Monday, May 1, 2079.
We have created a Google form that will give us an idea how many students to expect. This is for planning purposes and it will be helpful to know if your child will be staying.

See below for the late bus information
5) [REMINDER] Dungeons and Dragons - Recreation Dep't Club
After some discussion at school we have been able to bring back the Dungeons and Dragons Club for this spring. The flyer is attached. Additionally, I have provided the link to register for the program below. Please consider signing your child up if they are into D and D or want to learn.
Registration is currently open through the recreation department.
6) [REMINDER] From Superintendent Chuang - Survey and Entry Findings
Please consider filling out the Strategic Planning Survey #1 and reviewing Cliff's Report of Entry Plan Findings.
7) [REMINDER] Relay For Life
The Student Council will be rolling out a Winter Coin Drive to raise money for Relay for Life Bedford from February 26th to March 29th. Relay for Life raises important funds for the American Cancer Society to support patients and families experiencing hardship due to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Our students at JGMS will participate in a friendly competition between our grade level teams to meet our goal of $4,000.00! We will be placing Relay for Life boxes in our advisory classes and once a week we will collect and weigh the money received. Our fabulous Wake Up JGMS anchors will plan to do a segment called “Weigh in Wednesday” where they will announce the top teams each week based on participation in the coin drive. At the end of the fundraiser, our top team will receive a group prize with a prize to be determined.
Please save your coins and encourage your child to bring in loose change to contribute to the team competition as we raise money for this important cause.
8) [REMINDER] MCAS Schedule
As you may know, the Massachusetts Education Reform Law of 1993, G.L. c. 69, § 1D, requires that all students meet the Competency Determination (CD) standard, which is usually done by earning a passing score on MCAS. This requirement is for all students educated at public expense. Although MCAS scores do not impact middle school advancement, at JGMS, we use MCAS scores and other data sources to identify areas for improvement for individual students as well as make curricular and scheduling adjustments that impact all students.
After careful deliberation we have finalized the MCAS dates for 2024. When scheduling MCAS this year we navigated a variety of possible schedule conflicts. We scheduled testing in a way that honors the priorities below to the best of our ability. When scheduling, we:
tried to avoid the very beginning of the MCAS testing window. This prevents us from falling victim to the testing website malfunction and gives us more time to prepare students and ourselves for testing days.
tried to avoid the end of the MCAS testing window. This gives us ample time to administer make ups.
tried to avoid testing on days leading up to a vacation.
avoided Wednesdays as they are shorter days.
worked around school events and trips that have been scheduled.
did our best to avoid holidays.
Throughout the year and especially around the test dates, please help your child by continuing to prioritize attendance on testing days, support your child in getting a good night of sleep, and eating breakfast on the morning of the test. Thank you for supporting your child's education and participation in MCAS testing. Please make notes of the dates and our effort to minimize conflicts. Although we do our best to avoid religious holidays, we were unable to avoid all of them. If there is a test scheduled during a holiday that your child recognizes or your child will be out for any reason, please let us know and we can plan to schedule the test session for your child during our make up window.
The MCAS dates have been confirmed and as promised, are posted below.
REGULAR REMINDERS
[REMINDER] Chromebook Care
Please take some time to review with your child the importance of treating their Chromebook care. We have been observing some mishandling of the Chromebooks which include sliding it on the ground to tossing it as if it was a pile of textbooks. The Chromebook policy is on pages 27-31 in the JGMS Student Handbook.
In addition to caring for their Chromebook, please encourage your child to charge their device each night. We know how vigilant students with cell phones are to charge up their phone at night. So if they can bring that same energy (pun intended) to charging their Chromebook, we can ensure students will have a functioning device each day.
If you need to purchase a new charger, please reach out totech_support@bedfordps.org and they can facilitate a purchase.
If you want to purchase insurance which will fully cover the Chromebook, please use this link.
Here is where to buy the charger?

[REMINDER] Tips to Managing Our Children's Phone
We received even more new tips for managing our children's phone! Keep them coming. Thank you all for adding some helpful hints!
When I am not acting as the principal at JGMS, I am the father of three daughters of 4, 7, and 9 years old. I admit, I use my phone to keep my children busy at times and unfortunately, they became aware of how to find things I thought I was preventing. I noticed they kept finding their way into YouTube or games I thought deleted numerous times. Turns out I would "Remove" the App (removing isn't deleting apparently), just to find out it was in the Library. Then I would delete the app, just to find out they could download a previously purchased app without a password. My kids were taking control of their electronic usage and I couldn't keep up. After hearing from some families about their concerns with phone and social media use, I felt compelled to repost a note from a previous year which includes tricks to blocking certain privileges from my own phone. I am proud to say that I was successful last year in navigating the technology, I deleted and prevented apps from coming back, the then 6 and 8 year old accepted their fate rather quickly, and my wife and I survived the meltdown of my then 3 year old.
Now many of you have likely figured out how to permanently delete apps, block privileges, and limit time on devices and you don't need the help of a novice like me. I do wonder however if some could use a bit of advice from each other. So in the spirit of a partnership, I created a document with tips to gaining control over our children's device. I have given anyone access to read and/or edit the document. This way we all can view the advice and also can add ideas that may be helpful. I am an iPhone user and I started the document with 3 seemingly basic iPhone suggestions. Please feel free to add any tip you found helpful in navigating technology with your children's phone. Together I would like to think we can support all children to be model citizens in both the physical and digital world.
