Introducing Our New Assistant Principal!
Tamara Jones
Mesa Middle School has recently welcomed our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Jones. We asked her about her plans and what she is going to do as the new Assistant Principal. In response she stated “I would like to help create strong partnerships between the school, students and families through open communication with parents and/or caregivers to build excitement in learning within the learning environment.” Mesa might miss Mrs. Jones as a teacher and the Student Council Adviser, but we are looking forward to see what Mrs. Jones does for our school.

Internet Safety Tips - Keeping Your Information Private
For Students:
- Keep Passwords Private: Never share your passwords with anyone except your parents. Create strong passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Be Cautious Online: Only share personal information, like your name, address, or school, on trusted websites and with people you know in real life.
- Think Before You Post: Once something is posted online, it can be hard to remove. Avoid sharing anything that you wouldn’t want everyone to see, including personal details and photos.
- Watch Out for Scams: Be careful with messages or emails from people you don’t know. Don’t click on links or download attachments from unfamiliar sources—they could be phishing attempts.
- Use Privacy Settings: Adjust the privacy settings on social media accounts to limit who can see your information. Only accept friend requests or followers from people you know.
- Secure Devices: Always lock your devices with a password or PIN when not in use, and don’t leave them unattended.
For Parents:
- Educate About Privacy: Teach your child the importance of keeping personal information private and the potential risks of oversharing online.
- Monitor Online Activity: Keep an eye on your child’s online activity. Use parental controls and regularly review the apps and websites they’re using.
- Discuss Safe Social Media Use: Talk about the importance of privacy settings on social media and encourage your child to only connect with people they know in real life.
- Set Guidelines: Establish rules for internet use, such as not sharing personal information, limiting screen time, and regularly reviewing what your child is posting online.
- Lead by Example: Show your child how to protect personal information by practicing safe online behavior yourself.
- Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest online safety trends and threats, so you can better guide your child in protecting their personal information.

Mesa's New Student Council
We spoke with some of the winners of the student council election to see what they would plan to do for Mesa Middle School. They each ran for their candidacy by making posters and speeches to convince students to vote for them. Our winners were, President : Frankail Kingam, Vice President : William Hernandez, Historian : Sergio Leyva, Secretary : M.P., Treasurer : A.M.
We had a word with the new President Frankail Kigham, he was asked, “ How did you win over your voters?” He replied, “My voters already knew me, and I also won over the whole football team.” We asked, “Were you confident?” He said, “I actually was, I was very hopeful and confident.” When we mentioned his speech, we wanted to know if he was going to keep all of his promises. He stated, “Yes I do, I actually have multiple surprises for the year.” His final words for the interview were, “I’m very glad I won, if you are someone who voted for me you can count on me to make this year a good one.”
The new Vice President, William Hernandez, was asked how he felt about winning the election, and what he has done so far. He responded with, “I feel very happy that I have won the election and I am helping with the upcoming Color Run and Parade. I also want to do my best for the students and staff of Mesa Middle School”
The winner of the Treasure position was A.M., who was asked various questions about his new position.“Before the election did you think that people would vote for you?” He replied, “Yes, because I was the only candidate.” “Do you think the other student council members will make good changes this year?” He stated, “Yes, they’re smart.” “What does the Treasure do and how does it affect the school?" He said: It keeps track of all the school’s budget and funds made in the Student Council Organization.” The final question was “Do you have anything else to say about being the new Treasure” He ended his interview by saying he knows that they will have a good school year with the new Student Council Team”
The Assistant Treasure, C.H. was asked how he felt on winning and what she is going to do for our school to improve it she replied with “I feel more involved and hope to make school better by improving things like school dances, and try to make concession prices lower.”
Sergio Leyva was the winner of the Historian position, he was asked if he has done anything as Historian and he stated, “Yes I did, I helped with the Assembly” He also said he liked being a Historian because he gets to do really fun activities such as keeping records of what the Student Council does for the year.

First Dance Of The Year!
Here at Mesa Middle School, the Student Council hosted our first dance of the year. This was made exclusive for students that had no major referrals, and students with no dress code violations were able to dress out that day. We had DJ T. Stewart (Aka Coach Stewart) playing songs requested from students.
The 6th grade students appeared to enjoy the dance and showed their enthusiasm by having fun. One student named E.D said that he enjoyed sitting on the benches and talking with his friends. He hopes the dances get better as the year goes on. The 7th graders came in excited to get out of their regular schedule classes. K.J enjoyed the time out, but would have liked some more options in the concession, and wanted more diverse music. Whereas the 8th graders came in excited for their last first dance in middle school. V.Q thought that the dance was more enjoyable than being in class and doing work and can’t wait for the next one. According to the Student Council they are working on future activities to encourage students to have a good year.

Volleyball Season Starts Once Again
We were excited for the volleyball season to begin, so we interviewed a couple of players the day after tryouts. As we interviewed M.P., she said she was ready for her upcoming game and hoped they were going to win their first game. Afterwards, we interviewed A.H., who agreed with M.P. in hoping to win, and hoped to do good at practice. After the game took place, on August 26 at Mesa Middle School, two more players, M.V. (9) and K.G (32). hoped they would win but sadly got defeated in the second round by 5 points in turn BMS won the game. Our team continues to work hard to try to win as many games as they can.
Dexter Demons VS Mesa Panthers
Numbers in () parentheses are jersey numbers*
Mesa's football team recently played its first scrimmage on our field. Their opponents were the Dexter Demons, and Mesa defeated them 46-6 later that day. The Dexter Demons played hard, but Mesa took the win. We tackled hard, threw far, and ran fast. Afterwards, we interviewed a couple of students from the team.
The first person we interviewed was A.T. (1), who said that he and his team did well with teamwork and that he thinks they are going to win their first real game, but to be able to do better, he needs to try as hard as he can for his team.
The next person to be interviewed was V.S. (8). We asked, "After the scrimmage, how can you improve your game play?" He responded with: "I can improve by learning the plays more and getting to know my position even better than before." He also said that the scrimmage helped him gain more experience. After that, he was asked: "Did you enjoy winning against Mr. Honts (one of the former Mesa football coaches and 7th-grade science teacher) and the Dexter Demons?" He answered: "Yes, I did because I could see the look on his face when he lost." The final question VS was asked to answer was: "Who on the football team do you think deserves to be MVP (Most Valuable Player) and why?" He then responded, "I think SH (another player on the team) because he scored two touchdowns, which was impressive for his size."
The last person we spoke with was H.C.(3). One of the questions was, "How can you improve for your next game?" He says that he can work harder, stay loyal to the game, and be the best he can. Then I asked, "Did this practice help you prepare for the real game?" He said, "Yes, it did." Then he was asked, "Do you think your team worked together? and he stated, “Yes, I do think they did.”.
