New Addiction Intervention this Year!
With tobacco still being the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more that 480,000 people annually, combined with the marketing strategies of tobacco and Vape companies in targeting youth, and with the epidemic of Vape use in youth today, we have decided as a district that we will combat this with providing a resource to our students who are struggling with addiction and substance abuse. Latest Data shows that over 5.4 million students are using Vapes (E-Cigarettes) on a regular basis. This shows that we have to start to be proactive and help our students deal with the addiction of nicotine and tobacco as well as other chemicals. We will be using the N-O-T (Not On Tobacco) curriculum. N-O-T is an evidence-based youth tobacco cessation program, designed for regular tobacco users, including those who use e-cigarettes (Vapes) who are ready to quit now. Students will be required to attend 10 sessions during homeroom that are focused on how to face addiction, and ultimately beat it! We are excited to see what this program can do for our students. If you have any questions on this program, please reach out to Jason Cline at jcline@isd1.org
Cell phone use at AHS
The cell phone policy will continue to be the same as in the past couple of years. Students will be asked to turn their cell phones off when they enter each of their classes. There will be no cell phone use during class time, this includes going to the bathroom during class time. Students will be able to use their phones before and after school, between class periods, and during lunch. If you need to reach your child during class, please call the high school office at 927-2115 ext. 3500 and we will get a message to your child. Discipline will continue to follow the policy if there is misuse of the cell phone.
Cell Phone Discipline Policy
In conjunction with the cell phone policy the cell phone discipline will be the following:
First Offense: Teacher takes phone and keeps it until the end of the school day or turns into Dean’s office for collection at the end of the day. First offense does not warrant a referral but MUST be reported to Dean so that it may be tracked.
Second Offense: Teacher takes phone and generates a referral. Phone gets taken to the Dean’s office for pickup by parent or guardian. The student will receive ONE HOUR of after school detention.
Third and Fourth Offense: Teacher takes phone and generates a referral. Phone gets taken to the Dean’s office for pickup by parent or guardian. Every offense and those after this will result in TWO Hours of after school detention.
Fifth Offense: Teacher takes phone and generates a referral. Phone gets taken to the Dean’s office for pickup by parent or guardian. This offense results in TWO HOURS of detention along with the student turning the phone into the front office daily for the remainder of the school year. The student can choose to not bring the phone to school but if the student has the phone on them during the school day further discipline will apply.
