Hathaway Community, it's Fall y'all and we have a few important updates for our newsletter. Please make sure to take a few moments to read and review the important information in our October newsletter!

For the end of our month we have International ShakeOut Day and Red Ribbon Week celebrations.

Parade of Books is coming and YOU are invited! Please join us Monday, October 31 from 8:30-9:30 am. Doors open at 8:15 am. Come and celebrate the fall season and our love of books of all kinds!

October is also National Bullying Prevention Month (NBPM) and it is an important time to have conversations about addressing and preventing bullying. During October Hathaway had a great anti-bullying assembly titled, "Bye-Bye Bully!"

Hathaway is also proud to host Interface children and family services as they present, "My Body Belongs to Me." Thursday, October 20, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm at Hathaway. More information below.

At home COVID-19 Test kits for students are available in our front office.

As a reminder, at no time is it acceptable to send students to school when they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and especially if they have received a positive test result (laboratory based OR at-home test). Please make sure to report all positive cases to your students’ school.

• Sore Throat

• Headache

• Fatigue/Muscle or Body Aches

• Fever above 99.5 degrees

National Bullying Prevention Month (NBPM)it is an important time to have conversations about addressing and preventing bullying.

Bullying is the aggressive use of power, targeting another person or group of people with repeated, unwanted words or action, hurting them emotionally or physically. Bullying impacts the education, health, and safety of children and adults.

“The negative effects of bullying can last a lifetime,” said Julie Hertzog, director of the National Bullying Prevention Center. “Calling out bullying behavior and supporting those who are bullied can make a big difference for those who experience bullying.”

October is the month to highlight and celebrate the history and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. According to GLAAD, “during the early years, the celebration was largely marked by a call to action and commemoration. But since then, LGBT History Month has blossomed into a national coordinated effort to highlight exemplary role models from the LGBT community. Since 2006, this push has so far been led by LGBT rights and education organization Equality Forum.”

LGBTQ+ History Month allows the opportunity to extensively learn about the history of the LGBTQ+ movement, and what factors and measures will be successful in building communities and providing role models who will best represent and address the issues of the LGBTQ+ community.

This year's International ShakeOut Day is October 20, when millions of people worldwide will participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home!

Participating in an earthquake drill will help you and your loved ones understand what to do in case you are not with them during an earthquake. Make sure you and your children understand what to do at home and our school's emergency procedures for disasters.

Interface Children & Family Services, works with teachers, parents, medical professionals, and more to prevent abuse in our community. Interface educational programs help adults learn to recognize the signs of abuse while equipping students with ways to protect themselves.

Interface will present the My Body Belongs to Me a child sexual abuse prevention program that gives strategies to practice personal safety skills with children.

Interface Children & Family Services,is focused on making sure every child, teen, parent, and adult in our community has every opportunity to thrive.

Tuesday, 10/25 – Wear your school colors and say no to drugs!

• Staff and students are encouraged to wear Hathaway shirts/school colors.

Wednesday, 10/26 – Use your head, don’t do drugs - Crazy Hair/Hat

• Staff and students are encouraged to wear their hair in a crazy style.

Thursday, 10/27 – Sock it to drugs - Crazy Socks

• Staff and students are encouraged to wear crazy or silly socks.

Dancing with Our Future Stars (DWOFS) is a non-profit organization that builds leadership and self-confidence through dance and fitness. At no cost to schools, our students in first, second and third grade learn a variety of dances, such as Salsa, Bacheta, Meringue, Boogaloo, Tango and Vallenato, Andean and Cumbia. Dance classes, which supplement the regular day elementary physical education program, started last week!

Thank you to our incredible Hathaway community members, students and staff who joined us for our first in person Back to School night since the fall of 2018! We hope you all had a wonderful evening, enjoyed the performances, visiting classrooms and getting to meet our great teachers. We are looking forward to another great year with all of you!

Heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Vasquez for receiving the much deserved recognition of being Hueneme Elementary School Districts Teacher of the Year! Ms. Vasquez attended school at Hathaway as a child and has devoted 36 incredible years to the students staff and community here at Hathaway as an amazing educator! Ms. Vasquez has long been a pillar of professionalism, a role model of dedication and constant growth as an educator. The Hathaway staff is proud and honored to have the opportunity to work along side her through the years. Great work Ms. Vasquez!

Hathaway and the Governing Board recognize the harmful effects of bullying on student well-being, student learning, and school attendance and desire to provide a safe school environment that protects students from physical and emotional harm. Hathaway is excited to share an exciting opportunity for after school learning enrichment through our new Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP)

ELOP provides afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade.

“Expanded learning” means before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of pupils through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. Our ELOP programs complement, but do not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year.

Hathaway Community, one of the most important goals at Hathaway is for us to work together to keep all students, staff and educational partners safe as we enter and exit campus. Please be aware that the Oxnard Police Department will be in the area and may be issuing citations.

Please remember:

• During morning drop-of and afternoon pick up, please do not park in red zones or double park on Dollie Street in front of the school.

• Parking lots are for district staff and individuals who need accessible parking only.

• Please remember to use crosswalks and sidewalks when walking to campus.

• Please be respectful to staff as we work together to enforce safety for all.

Hathaway After-School Education and Safety (ASES) enrollment for the 22-23 school year is happening now! Next fall we will have many new and exciting changes! ASES is Monday through Friday after school. Please stop by the office to pick up an ASES enrollment packet. Lets get ready for a great new year of learning!

Hathaway community, please ensure that our students arrive to campus no later than 8:00 am. Arriving on time allows students time to walk to their line and be ready to be picked up by their teacher. Students should be in their seats by 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 are marked tardy.

Great news! starting this year throughout California, as a result of Education Code (EC) 49501.5, all students in grades TK–12 will be provided two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during every school day regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility!

Good food and nutrition are an essential part of great learning!

Gentle reminders for dressing for success when coming to school: Please wear school appropriate clothing when at Hathaway.

Items that are not allowed:

• gang-related insignia/graffiti on clothing, backpack or school supplies/work,

• clothing with inappropriate writing (alcohol, drugs, weapons, disrespectful statements)

• No clothing, hats or personal items with team/sports logos

• Pajamas (except on celebration days)

• sleeveless tops, see through blouses/shirts, low cut or bare midriff tops; spaghetti straps

Nothing that distracts from the learning environment is allowed.

Its that time of year again! Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten 2022-23 enrollment is now open!

Students who turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd may enroll in Transitional Kindergarten.

Students who turn 5 by September 1st may enroll in Kindergarten.

TK is offered at Bard, Haycox, Hueneme, Larsen, and Williams Schools.

Enroll for both TK and Kindergarten at Hathaway. If TK is not offered at Hathaway, office staff will assist in enrolling your child in one of the TK classes at another school site. Based on enrollment, TK classes may be added to additional school sites like Hathaway. To see a TK and kindergarten classroom in action, please watch this short video:
