High School Art - "What does it mean to be an Artist?"
Throughout the course of the year, HHS art students embody what it means to be an artist, practicing the “Studio Habits of Mind." Students develop craft, engage & persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch & explore, and understand Art Worlds. Introductory and intermediate art classes aim to balance teacher scaffolding and guidance while allowing the students choice and growing autonomy as the year progresses. The goal is for them to acquire the technical skills, deepen levels of thinking, and gain the confidence and resilience to work through the artistic process from the initial idea and vision to the final product. This enables students to overcome obstacles in order to achieve artistic goals, engage in artistic dialogue with peers, observe and understand art both past and present, and reflect on artwork and creative decisions.
Once they reach the Advanced Art course, students develop a Sustained Investigation in which they investigate an overarching theme within their artwork. This gives the students an in-depth opportunity, past what they did in preliminary classes, to examine what is important to them as a person and artist, and what they hope to communicate to the viewer through their work. Students develop artistic goals based on past work and their vision for the future, develop project ideas and compositions for individual and collective work, persist throughout the art-making process, and continue to reflect and progress as they move forward in their artistic journey. By the end of the year, artists have a unified body of work that examines their theme in a variety of media and approaches. Not only does this process help each student develop a cohesive portfolio, but it also encourages them to discover and progress their individual style and artistic voice. Finally, Advanced Art students have the opportunity to enter their work into local, state, and national art competitions, and curate a personal display where they practice preparing and presenting their work and artist statement.

Theater Students Welcome Back Alumnus Nick Rehberger
We were thrilled to welcome back alumnus Nick Rehberger to Haslett High School on Wednesday, October 9th. Nick is currently touring with Les Misérables in the role of Javert, and he visited with our music and theater students to share his experiences and insights.
Nick graduated from Haslett High School in 2009, where he was an active member of the choir, band and theater programs. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and moved to NYC to begin his career.
Nick's Broadway debut was in The Glass Managerie (2013) and in 2015 he appeared on Broadway as Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof. Recently he can be seen on PBS in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production of Hamlet. Nick also has many additional stage, TV and film credits.
Nick's visit to Haslett High School was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn from a successful alumnus who is living his dream. We are grateful to Nick for taking the time to come back and share his story with our students.
