SCC CAPS Healthcare Happenings...

SCC CAPS Healthcare has been rounding out the Professional Skills Bootcamp with the mock interview day and Parent/Associate Conferences. There have been several very interesting guest speakers, awe-inspiring site visits, and rotations!

Observational Rotations

Observational rotations are an opportunity for associates to see different aspects of healthcare in a one-on-one setting. This experience really helps influence the pathway the associates will follow after CAPS and further enhance their mission in healthcare. These rotations could not be possible without our business partners providing these opportunities and sharing their expertise. Associates were able to experience procedures such as endoscopy, laparoscopic surgery, and the surgical robot Di Vinci on the same equipment medical students use to practice surgery skills.

Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital Site Visit

Associates interested in pediatrics learned about the history of Ranken Jordan and were able to hear from a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and a speech therapist.

Associates attended the BJC occupational health fair to get their flu shots and learned about how health care providers take care of themselves.

Congratulations!

Associates Rachel Fernandez and Delaney Shuffett have both been accepted to an interdisciplinary team for MEDLaunch. MEDLaunch is a non-profit, biomedical and entrepreneurship incubator partnering with St. Louis University (SLU) and other organizations in the St. Louis area. This is an amazing opportunity for the associates to be innovative and learn from a wide array of professionals and work alongside medical students at SLU.

Chip Phelan - STEMI Coordinator, SSM Health

Chip talked with associates about not only how a cardiac catheter works, but also his career path starting as an EMT. He shared lessons in observation and crisis management that he has gained that help him each day. Chip is well on his way to earning his Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP)!

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign intended to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

Hands-On Learning

Associates practiced placing an intraosseous infusion (IO) on a egg. Intraosseous infusion (IO) is the process of injecting directly into the marrow of a bone. This technique is used to provide fluids and medication when intravenous access is not available or not feasible.

Associate learned how to stabilize an airway. Maintaining a patient airway is the most critical first-line step in resuscitation.

Associates were able to see the supplies readily available in a trauma room.

BJC Better Breathers Community Outreach

Mr. Sacre’s class had the opportunity to see the BJC Community Outreach through the Better Breathers group. While attending the outreach meeting, the associates learned about seasonal triggers for those with a variety of chronic breathing conditions, such as asthma, COPD, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.

SCC CAPS AM Cross-Strand Event

AM Associates from all three strands met at Alpha and Omega Coffee Roasters in Defiance, MO to network and learn about what other associates are doing as a part of their CAPS strands. Nina DeAngelo of the O'Fallon Chamber kicked off the event with a presentation on the "Do's and Don'ts of Networking." The event ended with some fun "minute to win it" type games.
