Sunday Chat with Principal Dothard
Hello Hornet Nation,
Welcome to the 3rd quarter! This is a great time of the year because our seniors start seeing the fruit of 13 years of work with college acceptance letters arriving in the mail! Every year the wall outside of our Career and College Center is covered with pictures of students holding acceptance letters and it's a beautiful thing! I've seen some students pictured 5 or more times, so be sure to share yours with Mrs. Waddell.
A lot of times students tell us they will get serious when it matters and for some of us now is the time. While report cards will not be released until February 7th, students can see grades on Schoology and if they are passing for the year. Many of you have done exactly what has been asked of you to some degree and you just need to continue doing what you have been doing. Then there are others who really need to buckle down and recover 2nd quarter, and/or get straight As and Bs 3rd and 4th quarters to pass to the next grade or be eligible for activities next year. It doesn't matter which position you have found yourself in, we are here to support you. After-school tutoring begins Monday, The Learning Center is open daily during lunch, and every teacher is available during Green or Gold lunch. Our will to succeed must be stronger than our "excuses".
We are nearing the end of the winter season so get ready to come out and support our playoff teams. Keep in mind if you are an SMCPS employee, your badge does not get you into games for free State Playoff events. I hope to see you at an event.
Let's have a GREAT week Hornet Nation!

Data shows, students who play sports handle pressure better, maintain good grades, get into less trouble inside and outside of school, and it helps them become better team players. These are all things that will help lead a more productive adult life. Which team will you be joining?

Student Cell Phone Use
Did you know that even just a few minutes on a cell phone texting, checking social media, etc adds up over the course of a school day? Students, who use their devices for just 5 minutes each period, lose nearly 1 period of instructional time per day (35 minutes of class). Over the course of 1 week, those 5 minutes per class adds up to nearly 4 missed periods! Personal devices can be a HUGE distraction for students. Please start this year off right, by keeping personal devices away in your bookbag or at a charging station if your teacher has one available. There is a direct connection to phone usage during the school day to grades. Encourage your student/s to only use their phone during lunch, between classes, or when approved by a teacher.
