Sculpture "Tales of Shurale"
"The Riddles of Shurale" is a famous sculptural composition dedicated to the famous poet Gabdulla Mukhamedgarifovich Tukay, a legendary Tatar poet. The monument was unveiled in 2011, the year of the 125th anniversary of the poet's birth.
Shurale is a mythical character often mentioned in Tatar folk tales. According to the description, this is a short, hunchbacked creature with long thin fingers and a small horn on its forehead, similar to the Slavic devil. Shurale is famous for his jokes and mischief. He also enjoys tickling lost travelers in the forest.
The poem by Gabdulla Tukay tells the story of how a woodcutter, who found himself in the forest, managed to trick Shurale. By pinching the mythical creature's fingers in a log, the woodcutter managed to avoid being tickled to death - this time, it was the forest villain who begged for mercy.
