This has been a huge week for our staff at Trident as they prepared for and hosted the Year Eight Day and Evening presentation. It was a wonderful event and showcased what fantastic teachers and educators we have working with your young adults, the innovative and creative programs we run at the school and the excellent resources and facilities that the school has to offer. It was great fun to interact with the Year Eight students and see them experience some of the learning that we can offer them at Trident. The feedback from both students and whanau was really positive and we do hope that we get to embrace them as part of the Trident whanau of 2022.

Senior Benchmark Week

This week we also started our benchmark exam week and it has been pleasing to see senior students working in the library and revising, and arriving promptly for their exam sessions. The learning at this time of year extends beyond the content and skills of a particular subject and includes self-efficacy, time management and building resilience. We wish our senior students success in their endeavours.

This year we are maintaining all our non-exam classes to help students complete their courses and gain their certificate in NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3. The disruption of the Covid-19 lockdown has had an impact on the rate at which students are achieving in their assessments and it is important we encourage them to come to school and make the most of the opportunities to complete their coursework. The perseverance they show now, and the commitment to completing the tasks, will give them a huge sense of satisfaction and help them with their confidence in their ability to succeed and excel. Please make sure your young adult is making the most of this time; it is vital for their ongoing success academically.

We are aware that exams can be stressful for some of our students and our whanau teachers, Deans and Guidance team have been working with students to help them use strategies to cope with the stress and still succeed.

Vaccinations for Covid-19

As you are all aware, the government has made vaccination mandatory for teachers and workers within schools and Trident is following the process set out by the Ministry of Education to register our current status as a workforce. We will, of course, be following the health directive in order to protect our wider community and limit the spread of the virus.

In addition, the MOE has required schools to register the vaccination status of all of our students who are eligible for vaccination against Covid-19 and you will receive this week a form requesting this information about your young adult and explaining the rationale for the collection of this information.

Please use the government website to gain further information about the Ministry’s requirements and talk to your young adult about the Covid-19 vaccination.

Subject Selection for 2022

We are now at the time in the year at which we start to goal set and determine pathways with our students for 2022. This is exciting but can also be daunting if your young adult is unsure of what options are available and how they want to pursue their studies. This is ripe discussion in whanau and whanau ako class time but it is also important that they explore their plans with you as whanau. We look forward to our whanau meetings when this planning can be shared as a partnership between you at home and the school.

Great Barrier Island Adventure 2021

This year’s GBI trip has suffered from the Alert level 3 lockdown imposed on Auckland and Mr Rowland has been in constant negotiation with the providers on the island to try to ensure that the adventure can be realised. The upshot of many weeks of changes, resetting dates and bookings, is that we are now planning to take the group to the island at the beginning of next year. This has some great advantages – the weather and the possibilities of island life in the summer months - but also some drawbacks – starting the year 11 program of NCEA out of school. As a teaching staff we will work alongside the students to ensure the disruption is minimized and that we can offer them a full and manageable NCEA course load when they return.

In addition, Mr Rowland is planning the Year 10 GBI 2022 – his commitment to this program is outstanding and the work beyond the school day involved in this, is considerable. We are so lucky to have such excellent teachers at our school.

Senior Ball

It is with regret and disappointment that I have to confirm that we will not be able to hold a senior ball this year at Trident. The initial change in the exam times caused by the Lockdown, meant that we were unable to hold the ball in its usual spot at the end of Term Four. Thanks to Mrs Shaw and Mrs Boyce, we re-timetabled it for this term, but under Alert level 2 event requirements we could not fulfil the health and safety requirements and so sadly have had to cancel the event completely.

As a small compensation, we are still hopeful that we will be able to host the Graduation Evening for our year thirteen students and their whanau. We will be in touch with you about the details of this.

A huge thank you to all the senior students (Year 12 and Year 13) and Year 9 who helped out on Open Day and Evening this week. I was so proud of them; mature, friendly, personable and simply kind – they represented the best of Trident and were excellent role models for the visiting students.

Have a peaceful and relaxing long weekend with whanau and we will see everyone back bright and punctual, please, on Tuesday morning!

This year internal subjects will be running alongside benchmark exams. This means all students who take a subject that does not have an exam are expected to be in school following their normal timetable. This way those with internal assessments due will be able to continue working to gain the credits needed to complete their NCEA level. If your student has a mixture of internal and external courses they are expected to attend any internal classes when not in an exam. If there are any questions your student can speak to their Whanau teacher.

We have received information from the Ministry of Education that face coverings are required to be worn by students aged 12 and over while on school transport under all alert levels. For us this means all students must be wearing a face covering on the school bus from Tuesday the 26th of October.

Providing face coverings is the responsibility of individuals and caregivers. Any student who is unwell should stay home and not travel on a school bus. If you have a mask wearing exemption please show this to the bus driver. Please contact the school if you have any queries.

Futures Academy for 2022

Ms Haines and Ms Wildash are currently interviewing students for the Futures Academy 2022. There are some exciting new courses including boat handling, early childhood education, game design, computer security and creative arts, as well as our regular programs, construction, automotive, agriculture, boat building, engineering, hair and beauty, IT, driving, hospitality,tourism etc. Please see Ms Wildash or Ms Haines if you are interested.

Tertiary Study for 2022

Students can see Ms Wildash in the Careers Hub for support completing applications. Students should also check out www.moneyhub.co.nz and www.studyspy.ac.nz.

Student Allowance and Loans

Year 13 students who have turned 18 may be eligible for a student allowance, please see Ms McGowan for more information. Students needing to set up their studylink accounts for 2022 should see Ms McGowan for assistance.

Students requiring first aid certificates.

Year 13 students who require first aid certificates for their tertiary studies eg: nursing, please let Ms McGowan in the Careers Hub know. We can help you to complete this course this year.

Cadetship Opportunity

WSP Whakatane has a cadetship opportunity for a school leaver interested in a career in engineering, architectural technology or surveying. Girls Football UK Tour 2024 Expression of Interest / Information Evening. We would like to offer our Girls Footballers the opportunity to visit the UK for a Girls Football UK Tour in 2024. The tour and information meeting will be open to Whanau and students who are current Trident Year 9 and 10 students as well as any Year 8 students who will be enrolling with Trident in 2022.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday 27th October at 5.30pm in the Trident High School Library. We hope you can make the meeting on 27th October but if you are unavailable and would like your daughter to be involved, please contact stanhopej@trident.school.nz and I will be in touch. Otherwise, I am looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting so we can unpack this exciting opportunity for our girls footballers.

We thank Mrs Robb, Sam McLeod and Courtney Abbot for their fantastic work earlier this week, working with Intermediate students to help them gain confidence in the theatre world. Drama, singing, dance and all aspects of productions are a very important part of Trident and it was a great opportunity to share this with our community.

Well done to our students who have been a part of this great project.

The corner of King Street and Victoria Ave (opposite Gibbos Fresh Fish and next to Kope Indian Cuisine) has been transformed into a place where youth can hang out, feel part of and belong. There are gardens, a skate ramp, a legal graffiti wall and pallet furniture to sit on. This has been able to happen with the support of many different people and organisations including Trident High School.

Over the weekend 5 of our students took part in the first kayaking regatta of the season. This regatta is run slightly different in that all males and females race against each other in the K1 events and are divided into 3 divisions. All 5 students did exceptionally well all paddling in the 1st division and qualifying for A and B finals in their individual events. The team events are held in age group and here we really shone. The U16 girls of Caitlyn Esterhuizen, Jess Cleghorn, Hannah Baxter and Eva Fuller competed in the K4 events in the U16 and U18 categories and won both of these races. They also raced in the K2 events and placed 1st and 2nd in the U16 events and also placed in the U18 age group. Michael teamed up with 3 other team mates and came 1st and 2nd in the K4 events as well as a 3rd and a 3rd and 2nd in the K2 events. A great weekend of paddling by them all.

Congratulations to Bradley Rothwell who was selected for a NZ talent identification camp which took place last week. A strong showing for BOP at the National U18 tournament and for his school team in the BOP competition helped him secure a spot in the camp. Players are picked on the back of their performances across the season but also for their future potential.

Trident High School has opted into the government’s Optional Donations Scheme in 2021-2022

Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
