Dear Parents/Guardians:
This first half of the year has flown by! Teachers and students have been working hard. With winter break upon us, we encourage you to relax, unwind, and settle into a safe & restful break. Winter break dates are December 23-January 1, 2025. School will start again on January 2, 2025 for the new year.
Attendance: Students demonstrate higher achievement gains when they have good attendance. Being on time is just as important. At Burnside, instruction starts at 7:30 a.m. Help your children by making sure they have good attendance and arrive on time.
Cold Weather Gear
As we move into the cold, mittens/gloves, hats, coats, snow pants, and boots will be needed for recess. We do go outside, even at 0 degrees. Let us know if you have any needs in this area by contacting Hannah Bystrom at mailto:hdbystrom@rwps.org
May you enjoy the break and return rested for a fantastic new year!

Winter Weather - School Delays & Closures
Notification: School may be canceled or delayed when the safety of students is threatened by severe weather or other circumstances. When possible, the Superintendent makes decisions before 5 a.m. and no later than 5:30 a.m. and notifies parents via phone calls, emails, www.rwps.org, and the district’s Facebook page. A brief text message alerting people to the email also may be sent; message frequency varies and standard message and data rates may apply. (Reply STOP to cancel text notifications.) The district also will post closures, delays, or early releases on WCCO Channel 4, KSTP Channel 5, KMSP Channel 9 and KARE Channel 11.
Individual Circumstances: It is difficult to anticipate weather conditions in advance, and conditions may differ in different parts of the District. Do not send your child to school if it is unsafe. Call your school’s attendance line to indicate your child is unable to attend due to severe weather or poor road conditions.
Late Starts: Generally, if school starts late due to poor weather or other emergency, the School District announces a two-hour late start. In that case, estimated bus pick-up times, entrance bells, and starting times for school will be two hours later than usual.
Early Releases: If there is a potentially dangerous storm arriving during the school day, school may be released early. It is important for all students to know what to do if school closes early. Please review procedures with your child and update your child’s emergency contact card with contact information.
For E-Learning Days, grade level packets of activities were provided to you during conferences for your students to complete within five days of the e-learning day. Please call the office if your child needs an additional copy.
The district 2024-2025 district calendar allows for up to five E-learning days and two no-school or “snow” days.

Meet Ms. Daisy...Ms. Ryan's therapy dog
As seen in the November 19 RWPS Newsletter
Daisy works wonders by reducing anxiety and bringing joy and calm to everyone at BES … she’s basically a furry stress ball. Daisy is a retired hunting dog and has been a certified therapy dog at BES for two years. She’s also a master at modeling patience and unconditional love.
Daisy spends much of her day on her cozy bed snuggling students or lying in any ray of sunshine she can find. In short, Daisy isn’t just a dog, she is the ultimate peacemaker. When students (or staff) are in distress or simply just need a Daisy break, she’s always willing to share her love. She listens without judgment and makes everyone's job a bit easier!
Although Daisy spends much of her time in our BEST program, sometimes she makes the rounds at recess and through the day. Per our District Policy 536, if you would prefer your child not have exposure to Daisy due to allergies, fear, cultural view, or for any other reason, please contact Principal Jennifer Grove at mailto:jpgrove@rwps.org.
