Principal's Message
Dear Families,
First, a big congratulations to seventh grader, Julia Andersen, who is this year's Pershing Middle School Spelling Bee Champion! We are so proud of Julia and look forward to her representing our school at the district level competition later this year.
I also wanted to remind families of the importance of getting your children to school on time. I know the weather was not ideal last week, but we have been seeing a noticeable uptick in the number of student arriving late to first period. School starts at 8:00 AM, the first bell rings at 7:55 AM. We recommend having your child arrive at school no later than 7:55 AM. When children arrive late to first period it creates significant disruptions to their learning and to the overall learning environment for other students already in class. Please help us by making every effort to get your child to school by 7:55 AM daily and if your child walks to school reminding them of the importance of being on time!
And finally, we were so excited to welcome our future Panthers, as the fifth graders from Benchley, Dailard, Gage, and Green elementary schools and their familes came to tour the campus. We had a packed house both days and were so appreciate that our Dailard and Green families even braved some pretty wild weather on Monday to visit the campus! Our student ambassadors and the entire student body and staff enjoyed showing off our campus and classroom to our future Panthers! I have some great pictures below.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray

SAVE THE DATE: ICAC ENCORE PARENT PRESENTATION ON FEB 15
Pershing MIddle School in collaboration with the Pershing Foundation has invited our local law enforcement to come back for an encore of their Internet Crimes Against Children Presentation for any family in the Henry Cluster. The presentation will be held at 9:00 AM on February 15. We are seeing a significant uptick in social media use among children in middle school and even elementary school. Law enforcement provides some incredibly useful info for parents about the the things to watch out for as well and resources to help parents help their children navigate phones, social media, and the digital age we know live in .
PERSHING SELECTED FOR NAEP TESTING
Pershing Middle will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on Thursday, February 15, 2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public. One hundred of our 8th graders will be randomly selected to take the NAEP. If your 8th grader is one of the students randomly slected for testing you will be receiving an email notificiation this week. If you do not receive an email notification about NAEP your child has not been randomly selected.
SPORTS PHOTOS FOR THE YEARBOOK
Yearbook needs your help. We are including the Pershing sports teams in the yearbook but we need pictures. If you happen to have any pictures that we can use, please sent them our way. We have plenty of track pictures. We are still in need of both girls and boys basketball as well as the new sports that are starting, soccer and volleyball. You can email your photos to sruckle@sandi.net. Any photos you have will be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help and support.
It was another great week for our Pershing MSA teams.
Congrats to our Girls' Soccer Team they are 3-1 after a 2-0 run this weekend defeating Millenial Tech and Bethune 12-0 in both games. Our Boys' Soccer team ended the weekend 1-0 with a strong win over Millenial Tech and their 2nd game postponed due to rain.
Our girl's volleyball team stands at #2 in the overall middle school rankings with two victories this weekend against Roosevelt and Millenial Tech. Our Boys Volleyball team came up short against Marston but rebounded with a strong win against Willson.
Also, families the yearbook is in need of photos for our Fall (Track & Basketball) and Winter (Soccer & Volleyball) athletes competing. If you have any photos you'd be willing to share please email them to our yearbook advisor Ms. Siri Ruckle at sruckle@sandi.net
