Starling: Symbolism
How Symbolic Language Speaks To & Through Us
Symbolism is a complex and nuanced language that takes time to build an understanding of, especially on a personal level. How are you working to become fluent in your individual symbolic understandings? In this week's show we look at the power of symbols and I try to give some words to my passion for this topic. I discussed my relationship to the four leaf clover, and how that symbol has transcended just a lucky sign. The picture is of a page in an old sketchbook of mine where I taped down 4 leaf clovers as I found them. It is really hard to convey how near and dear to me this topic is and I hope I am able to begin to explain the power of symbol.
In college I had a professor tell me once that if I taught anything to my students, it had to be symbol. At the time I was like "of course", but it wasn't till years later when I found the meaning and personal relationship that I understood why he told me that. Artists in any field must develop their own personal symbolic language and learn to read their world with their own understanding. Through an investigation into symbols an artist can deepen the meaning in their work and create more unique, intimate and rewarding pieces. But this transcends out art and becomes part of us, our identity and our understanding of the world around us...when we let it.

This Week's Suggested Practices:
- Identify systems of symbolism you are already well versed in
- Review your past artwork and identify symbols and symbolic themes (Did you add the purposefully or did they arise on their own?)
- Document your own Symbolic understandings (always develop your own understanding before research into the universal meanings)
- Perhaps create a symbolic journal that documents your meanings and notice how this meaning evolves and develops over time
- Decide what you symbolize. What are you a symbol of and how does this connect to your personal identity?
- Create work around this theme. See what symbolic offers you as you create.
Resources for Research
Check out any of these links below to research and discover information about symbolic meanings. Make sure to consider your own ideas and personal connections to the symbols you are working with. Your personal connections are valid and should not be dismissed when you study traditional meanings.
When Literalism Wins
Sometimes it is funny to imagine if everything was actually literal, rather than symbolic. Literal music videos are old on YouTube, but still great for a laugh. They emphasis why art is flat when literal...but it is hilarious.

This Week's Playlist
Follow the link below to the playlist I put together around symbolism. Every week I make a playlist that helps me stay in the flow of the theme. This week I picked songs that I felt had strong symbolic meaning. I am sure you could think of many more and suggest you make a playlist to help you think about symbolism too.
