A Note From Principal Becker
Dear Families,
I am so grateful to be a part of the McNear learning community and am excited to share this special school with you as you embark on your first elementary experiences with your children. McNear is the perfect small community school with an abundance of varied learning opportunities. As our mission states, we truly work to develop an inclusive and safe learning environment where meaningful authentic experiences take place. McNear seeks to support the whole child through a well-balanced approach, cultivating creative and critical thinkers in the arts, math and sciences. With our McNear Arts and Sciences Maker's Space (MASC) as a hub, arts and sciences are interwoven as a launching pad for integrated and applied learning. Our Environmental Literacy Program allows all students to deeply explore our grounds and learn what it means to be a steward of the earth. Our bi-monthly gardening lessons allow students the opportunity to plant, harvest, taste and learn about vegetation and native habitats. Our exceptional after school performing arts program is open to all 1st-6th grade students and offers students the opportunity to explore their acting talents with full costumes, sets, music and direction. Our families are struck by the beautiful park-like setting of our campus as well as the supportive community where students, teachers and families mindfully communicate, collaborate, take risks and express joy.
From back to school ice cream socials to creek restoration to kindness campaigns, bat nights, plays, student leadership and robotics teams there are many ways for your child to grow, learn, celebrate and participate in place based learning. And did we mention Disco Fridays? Teachers and staff are ongoing learners themselves studying the latest mindfulness and empathy programs, technology applications, science curriculum adoptions and arts integration with awareness that social and emotional learning goes hand in hand with academic success. From staff to teachers to students and families, everyone is here to support one another through all the difficulties and opportunities that life throws at us. From this first decision about choosing a school that is a right fit for your child and your family to questions about reading development, homework hassles and the like I am available and eager to help with twenty years experience teaching grades K-8 as well as navigating life and school with my own son.
Please join one of our principal question and answer sessions or full panel presentations in the coming weeks and months to learn more about the amazing teaching and learning happening at McNear Elementary. Additionally, I can be reached at mbecker@petk12.org or 707-778-4752 to answer any questions you may have along the way. We are excited to partner with you and invite your child to grow with us!
Welcome to the nest, falcon!
Warmly,
Melissa Becker
From Our PTA
Greetings Future Falcon Families!
On behalf of the PTA Board, welcome to McNear School. I’m especially proud of our PTA and how it embodies our Falcon spirit: everything we do and work for is intended to benefit the community - our teachers and staff, our students, and also their families. We have an active TIDE, the Team for Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity, a parent-led program that focuses on connecting students and families in need with available resources. PTA also offers a wide range of school programs, including Garden, Performing Arts, After School Enrichment courses, Mentor Me Homework Club, the McNear Art and Science Center, and our newest initiative, an Environmental Literacy program. We fund a Teacher Supply Closet, which means parents never have to shop for school supplies, and teachers have all the supplies they need to offer the whole class. PTA also hosts fun community events, including Harvest Festival, Dia del Nino (in collaboration with the English Learner Advisory Committee), Earth Day, and Whacky Winter Run.
We hope you choose McNear School as your home for your children. The Falcon community is one big family who support each other, help each other grow both our minds and our souls, and have a lot of fun doing it! We look forward to you joining us!
