Wellness Corner
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
At the Wellness Center, we want to take this opportunity to bring attention to an important issue that affects many individuals—suicide awareness and prevention. Suicide can often be a difficult topic to discuss, but it’s essential that we foster open conversations and provide support to those who may be struggling. Together, we can build a caring and connected community that looks out for one another.
If YOU or SOMEONE YOU KNOW is feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, or disconnected, please reach out. One conversation can make all the difference. Here are a few resources that can offer immediate help:
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Call or text 988 for 24/7, free, and confidential support.
- Crisis Text Line: Text HELLO to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
- Trevor Project: LGBTQ+ youth can reach out to 1-866-488-7386 or text START to 678678.
At our school, we’re here to listen and provide resources. The Wellness Center is a safe space where students can come to talk about their feelings, access mental health services, or just take a break when things feel overwhelming. Remember, it's okay to not be okay, and asking for help is a sign of strength.
Helpful tip:
Take a moment each day to check in with yourself and those around you. Sometimes, a simple “How are you doing?” can open the door to someone who needs support. Let’s be there for each other this month—and every month.
Wellness Center Challenge:
This month, we challenge everyone to check in with three people—whether it’s a friend, family member, or classmate. Ask them how they’re feeling and really listen. A simple conversation could make a world of difference in someone’s life. Let’s commit to being a community that cares. You never know when your words could offer hope.
Counseling Corner
September marks an exciting time as we prepare for college applications and approach key deadlines. Here's what you need to know this month, especially if you're applying to the California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) systems, Private Schools, or Out-Of-State Universities.
Key Dates for CSU and UC Applicants:
October 1, 2024 – CSU Application Portal Opens
Beginning October 1, students can start submitting applications to any CSU campus. Use this time to explore different campuses and majors. You can browse the CSU schools and programs here:
CSU Degrees and Programs
November 1-30, 2024 – UC Application Submission Window
Although the UC application opens on August 1, submissions begin in November. Use the time before November to perfect your personal insight questions, gather recommendation letters, and finalize your application. Learn more about UC schools and programs at:
UC Application Portal
Private Schools and Out-of-State Universities:
If you're applying to private or out-of-state universities, be sure to check their specific deadlines, as these are often earlier than those for in-state public schools. Missing these deadlines could impact admission and scholarship opportunities, so visit each school's website to stay informed about early decision, regular decision, and scholarship dates.
Lastly, we highly recommend not submitting your application without first attending an application workshop or having it reviewed by a counselor or academic advisor. Be on the lookout for upcoming college information sessions and application workshops.
