Stanwood Middle School
Early Family Message - November 23, 2022
Good Morning Stanwood Middle School Families!
We are sending our Family Message early this week! Students will be headed home today at 10:40 a.m. Our office will be closing at 11:00 a.m. today.
This week Ms. Christmas and I met with our Superintendent, Dr. Rumbaugh, to talk about the student growth of our Spartans.
Our academic goals for our students--using unstuck strategies and using reading and writing strategies in all classes is part of the work we've focused on with all staff during our late start Wednesdays.
Our specific goal relating to student growth as a building is to measure whether or not students are using unstuck strategies to reduce feeling overwhelmed, which often leads to giving up or quitting when dealing with new learning.
The science behind getting stuck and new learning is pretty fascinating--our brain naturally starts to exhibit behaviors when it gets stuck. Our goal at Stanwood Middle School this year is to help students rewire from past behaviors that cause them to halt learning in its tracks when it gets tough.
As we observe classrooms and talk with students, we want to make learning and how we all learn part of the natural way we do business everyday at our school.
Over the next three weeks, your Spartan will see us in classrooms even more often with a focus on talking about the learning we all do each day.
Mark your calendars for the following PTO events:
Tuesday, November 29th we will be handing out all of fundraising items.
Friday, December 2nd we will be having a PTO Bingo Night in the cafeteria, it will start at 6:00 p.m.
ONCE AGAIN - LOST AND FOUND PICTURES!
We have included below lots of pictures of our lost and found. We will be donating everything on Friday, December 16th, so please take a look at the pictures included and have your student check the stage in the cafeteria when they have time
Last reminder for Volleyball Registration
Volleyball season starts on November 30. Please use this link Stanwood Middle School Athletic Registration to register your Spartan for volleyball season.
Volleyball starts with the first practice on November 30 and the last match on January 26.
In order for an athlete to start a season on time, they must fill out the registration form (link above or hard copy in the office) and be sure to include emergency contact information, insurance and the Athletic Code. 6th graders can participate in Cross Country (XC) and Wrestling only.
Sports Physical: All athletes must have a current sports physical (good for 2yrs) turned into the office BEFORE turning out.
ASB Card/Pay to Participate: Each participant must purchase an Associated Student Body card and Pay to Participate fee before the first contest. The ASB card is $20, Pay to Participate is $50 per sport ($100 maximum per year; Free/Reduced options for those who qualify).
Transportation: In the event that we cannot get a bus to out-of district competitions (due to bus driver shortage), we will have district vans. However, seating is limited, so the Stanwood/Camano School District is allowing families to arrange transportation to and from competitions when this occurs. These families will agree to provide their own transportation to and from away competitions and understand that the district assumes no liability/responsibility for the athletes during the transportation times. The waiver will need to be signed and returned to your athletic director prior to your first out-of-district event. *Hard copies of the waiver can be picked up in the office or from your athlete's coach Parent Transportation Waiver for Middle School Sports
Have a great break and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Meet The Spartan Staff
This week our Spartan Spotlight is on our indispensable health room staff. These two fabulous ladies keep our school as healthy as possible, dealing with everything under the sun when it comes to the health of our community.
Nurse Suzie Bliss is in her fourth year as a nurse at Stanwood Middle School, with 20 years of nursing under her belt. She loves the spirit, students energy, and fun staff at our school. When she's not nursing, she raises hens, works with animal rescue, and loves farming.
Mrs. Nordin is in her eighth year as the health room assistant at Stanwood Middle school, with 13 years in the district overall. She loves the staff and kids here, which help contribute to her upbeat energy she brings to the health room every day.
These health care heroes know the ins and outs of all of our Spartans and keep the lines of communication open between family and school each and every day. We are very grateful for them and all they do!
