Brown School Buzz
December 5, 2023

Dear Families,
With busy February coming to a close, the dawning of March brings more events, learning experiences and excitement at the Brown School. Before moving on to March, we'd like to thank you all for coming to our first concert and art show of the year. Our first, second and third graders performed so proudly, and we will continue our celebration of music over the next few weeks. As I shared at the concert, March is Music in our Schools Month and we are looking for volunteers to help us celebrate.More details below on how you can sign up below. I am grateful to be be working in a school community and district where the arts are celebrated so richly!
I have been so impressed with the learning in our PE and Wellness Classes! Students have been sharing all they have learned about the chambers of the heart, how the heart works, and how we can keep it strong! We are still tallying our Kids Heart Challenge successes, and it's not too late to register or help your child complete Finn's Mission. We have a large number of students who just have to do the Hands-Only CPR to complete the mission. We thank you all for your support of this effort to give to the American Heart Association.
So much in store for March. Please read on for all the details on Music, the Book Fair, the STEAM Fair, and so much more!
Thank you for your continued support of the Brown School!
Concert Smiles!
Scholastic Book Fair Next Week!
Next week is Read Across America Week, and we'll be engaging in a number of activities to celebrate reading and literacy. In addition to having some guest readers in classrooms, reading together as a school, and connecting with authors online, our PTO will be sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair! Please check in with your child's teacher for the day your child will be visiting the Book Fair.
If your child wishes to make a purchase at the Book Fair, paying for items via the "eWallet" is the preferred method. You can visit the Brown School Scholastic site to set up your child's Book Fair eWallet.
STEM CLUB-New Session
I have been so impressed with the our partnership with Marblehead High School and their newly formed STEM Club.
Here's a message from the STEM Club on the upcoming sessions:
We have had so much fun at the STEM club! The kids have learned how different shapes can strengthen a bridge and what a charge can do through balloons. We were excited by all the kids' fabulous participation and excitement for STEM! We would love to extend the opportunity to more students since so many of you were looking to sign up! Please use the new SignUp Genius link if you would like to be part of our second group of students. This new group will meet in March and May. The March activities will be the same as those completed with the February group. We'll return to the February group in April with some new activities.
Signup Genius link for new sessions!

Meet Ms. Katelyn Barrera!
We are very happy to introduce Ms. Katlyn Barrera who is now working in our office while our Ms. Ginelie is on maternity leave after giving birth to a beautiful bouncing baby boy! Mom and baby are doing great!
Katelyn comes to us with a variety of experiences working in schools and is happy to be part of the Brown School Team. She has been busy getting to know the staff, students, and families. Please join us in welcoming Katelyn, and please introduce yourself to her when you are visiting the Brown School office.
Massachusetts Report Card for the Brown School
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas.
You will notice on our report card that we are above the state average for both ELA and Math MCAS assessments. To improve student performance in our school, we are strengthening our multi-tiered system of support framework to support the academic achievement of all students. We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.
The Brown School celebrates with LOBBY LIVE!
March is Music in our Schools Month and schools across our nation will celebrating in a variety of ways. We are very excited to be taking part in the celebration at the Brown School again this year!
In addition to a very engaging enrichment for our third graders with musician David Coffin, on Friday, we will also be having LIVE MUSIC in our lobby every morning in March during at arrival time. Our aim is to have our students experience a wide variety instruments, vocals, and genres of music. We were thrilled to have so many volunteers last year and our students experienced everything from the cello and choral groups to the electric guitar and accordion!
Last year, we also had a few students who had been studying music outside of school share their talent as well. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be designated as student performance days this year. Student performers should be prepared to share 3 selections, and should be comfortable performing in front of an audience. The 15-20 minute time period is far too long for one elementary student to perform, so there are 3 slots for each of the student dates. If your child has been taking music lessons and/or participating in a music group outside of school and would like to share on one of our student days, PLEASE SIGN UP HERE.
Celebrating Black History at the Brown School with Lucretia and Joe!
As we strive to understand and learn more about the contributions of Black Americans throughout our history, and in particular in Marblehead, students have been engaging in conversations in classrooms and sharing literature about more famous Black Americans. And on Friday, we will celebrate our school's namesake! THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28 IS LUCRETIA AND JOSEPH BROWN DAY! Classrooms will be celebrating with conversations and gratitude for Lucretia and Joseph Brown for their contributions to our community. You can celebrate at home by clicking the links below and learning along with us....and maybe even bake some Joe Frogger cookies this weekend!
