Kindergarten: Self-Efficacy
AVID helps students develop a sense of self-efficacy. Students need to know that they can advocate for themselves and have the skills they need to accomplish their goals. There are specific things that kindergarten teachers do to help students advocate for themselves in a variety of situations. Kelso’s wheel is one tool students can use to advocate for themselves in social situations. It teaches students specific action steps they can take to solve problems with their friends. This helps students develop their sense of independence by allowing them to solve problems on their own. Self-efficacy is also developed when students look back and see their growth throughout the year. When they see all they have accomplished, students know that they are capable and can accomplish their goals. This sense of confidence will follow them throughout their life.
1st Grade: Self-Efficacy
At this point in the year, students’ emotions are very big; some of them make us feel really good, and some of them make us feel really icky. Not only are we learning strategies to add to our toolbox to help ourselves, but we are also learning how we can help our classmates when they are struggling with big emotions. We have been incorporating our Mood Meter, social emotional lessons, as well as using Kelso’s Choices to help us on the playground and in the classroom. We are also revisiting our organizational skills by keeping track of our notes for our Animal Reports. We are becoming quite the scientific researchers!
2nd grade: Independent Writing Projects
Throughout the year, students have explored many different genres of writing. They have studied and written personal narratives, teaching books, fractured folktales and fairytales, poetry, opinion letters, realistic fiction, fantasy books, and how-to and Q&A books. For the last few weeks of the school year, each student will reflect on their writing journey and select the genre and structure of writing they would like to focus on independently. During their independent writing projects, students are in the driver’s seat! Teachers are there to facilitate their learning and support them in their independent writing needs by helping them set personal goals about their writing.
3rd Grade: Focusing on the W and R in WICOR (writing and reading)
As our third graders gear up for the exciting transition to fourth grade, we're emphasizing the vital role of reading and writing in their learning journey. Through engaging book clubs, whole-class discussions, science investigations, and focused small group work, students will actively use their literacy skills to explore new ideas and deepen their understanding. We're also fostering essential collaboration skills, empowering them to learn effectively with their peers. These experiences in AVID are building a strong foundation for their continued academic success.
Free Swim Lessons for our Third Graders
Our third grade students will be participating in free swim lessons, thanks to our generous local Kiwanis Organization. Each year the Kiwanis pays for all NSSD 3rd graders to receive a week of lessons at the Stayton Pool. Our students will be participating May 27 - June 5. If you have a 3rd grader, more details will be coming to you from classroom teachers.
