Fourth Grade: Empathy and Kindness
Your child is learning how to better understand a point of view different from their own. Point of view is how someone thinks or feels about something. In this unit, fourth graders practice asking questions to understand the reasons behind someone’s point of view. For example, if one person loves being around dogs and another doesn’t, they might ask each other, “What is your experience with dogs? Why do you feel that way?” When children try to understand other points of view, it helps them work, play, and get along with others.
Why is it important? Research shows that children who learn the skills in this unit are more likely to:
Build stronger relationships
Resolve conflicts more effectively
Exhibit positive behaviors
Develop increased empathy
Practice at Home
What to Look For: Notice and praise your child when you see them trying to learn more about a point of view that’s different from their own. You may hear your child ask questions such as “Why do you think that?” or “What’s your experience?” to better understand someone’s way of thinking. You can say something like, “I heard you ask your sister why she doesn’t like watching scary movies the way you do. Good job trying to understand her point of view.”
Discuss: Describe how your experiences have affected a point of view. For example, “I’m always amazed at people who are comfortable in loud, crowded places. But my experience is living in a small, quiet town. I’m not used to crowds.”
Practice: Help your child practice learning about another point of view. Take turns answering questions such as the ones below. Give reasons for your thinking.
If you could invite anyone in the world to have dinner with you, whom would you invite?
Would you rather go to space or to the bottom of the ocean?
If you could make one rule that everyone in the world had to follow, what rule would you make?
Classical Corner by Elise Farrell
Welcome back to the Classical Corner! We have been diving in depth into Hozho Academy's Arete Wellness Program. An import and aspect of classical education is the formation of the whole student, body, mind, and soul and each part needs to be nourished so that they can all thrive together!
Last Classical Corner, we discussed the physical education piece of the Arete Program. Today, we are going to take a look at the other, just important piece...nutrition! In order to move our bodies, they need to be nourished and provided with energy. Hozho's lunch staff works diligently to provide our students with just that while our gardening team teaches students the beauty of what takes place when growing food Not only do they provide delicious, healthy meals for our students, but they are also working to provide our students with a nutritional education.
Each week, the students are introduced to a new food. They are taught the health benefits and when applicable, the historical culture around the food of the week. They lead the students in conversations revolving around ideas for healthy eating habits that give our bodies the energy to move, which in turn nourishes our minds and souls!
Every student is encouraged to try the food of the week, but no one is forced to like it right away. Like all beautiful and good things, our palettes require cultivation and a building of habit. The nutrition program seeks to help students build an understanding of healthy food options while also expanding their palettes. Did you know our tastes can change overtime? In exploring new foods and attempting to cook them in various different ways, we can expand our palettes and find ourselves enjoying healthy alternatives that nourish our bodies.
The Hozho lunch team also provides a party menu (linked below) where you can order wholesome, homemade classroom treats for birthday or holiday parties!
So how can you encourage healthy nutrition habits at home? My main recommendation would be to encourage your child to take an interest in their nutrition and allow them to be a part of the process. Let them help you grocery shop and pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try. When they do not like something, wonder out loud with them, is there another way we can make this that we might enjoy more? Have fun trying new, and experimenting with, recipes. Have conversations about the various health benefits of the foods you try. Ask about what foods they are learning about in school and whether or not they would like to see that food at home!
Classical Challenge of the Week!
As a family, pick on or two new nutritional foods to try and adapt at home! Try using it in different recipes and have fun by tallying which recipes were enjoyed the most!
