Little Lancer Lowdown
“Where Learners are Grown with Pride!”
February 2024
Dear Little Elba Lancer Families,
This month I wanted to share some information regarding social media and internet safety. As our children navigate the increasingly digital world, it has become crucial for us to stay vigilant in ensuring their online safety and well-being. In light of recent trends, we want to draw your attention to the importance of monitoring your elementary child's internet, social media, and text messaging activities. Monitoring the internet for elementary children is an essential aspect of ensuring a safe and age-appropriate online environment. As your students/children explore the digital world, we encourage parents to pay particular attention to the language and topics encountered during their online activities. Implementing parental controls and utilizing kid-friendly search engines can help filter out inappropriate content and maintain a positive online experience. Regular communication with children about their online experiences enables us to address any concerns and reinforce the importance of using the internet responsibly. By staying actively involved in their digital journey, we can foster a secure online space that aligns with their children's developmental needs.
The prevalence of unkind messaging among students has been on the rise, and it is essential for us to actively engage in understanding our children's online interactions. The messaging may occur through text messages, TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, just to name a few. By keeping a watchful eye on their digital communication channels, we can foster a safer environment for them to learn and grow. Open and honest conversations about responsible online behavior will empower our children to use these platforms positively, while our guidance helps them navigate potential challenges. Your involvement in their digital world will not only protect them from harmful experiences but also provide an opportunity for meaningful discussions about kindness, empathy, and responsible technology use.
I encourage you to have a conversation with your child(ren) and monitor your child's social media and internet activity. Below is a link that will help you understand the social media platforms that your child(ren) may use. Please reach out with any questions that you may have, as our Mental Health Team has additional resources as well.
With Lancer Pride,
~Mrs. Jessica Cramer
A Focus on Respect
In response to an increase in referrals involving disrespect over the past two months, our elementary school is working on promoting ways to show respect to adults and among students. We are reteaching what respect means and how to show it, through our Lancer Leader Expectations. One large area of referrals has been the absence of listening to adults and following their directions.
Parents can support this reteaching at home by reviewing our Lancer Leader expectations, reminding them to listen to the adult and follow directions, engaging in open conversations about the importance of treating others with kindness, reinforcing the values of empathy and understanding, and setting clear expectations for respectful behavior at home. Additionally, encouraging active listening and modeling respectful communication within the family can contribute to creating a positive and respectful atmosphere that extends beyond the school environment.
Your support at home with increasing respectful behaviors is appreciated so that we can grow the best Little Lancers.
Attendance Reminders
We are striving to improve attendance here in the elementary this year. There is a significant impact of regular attendance on your child's academic success in elementary school. Attending school consistently is crucial for your child's learning and development, as well as future success. Each day at school provides valuable opportunities for your child to engage in interactive learning experiences, build social skills, and establish a routine that fosters a positive attitude towards education. Regular attendance ensures that your child doesn't miss out on essential lessons, skills, and collaborative activities.
Here at Elba, parents/guardians will receive attendance stage letters at 5, 10, 15, and 20 absences. These letters are to inform you of the number of absences your child(ren) is at. Please know that these letters include excused (including sick) absences and unexcused absences. Although we want your child(ren) here at school, please know that we also recognize students will become sick and need to stay home. Please continue to adhere to our procedures if your child is sick (also located in the Elementary Parent-Student Handbook linked at the bottom of the newsletter).
Did you know, that for each day a student is absent they lose around 6 hours of instruction or approximately 360 minutes? Just 5 absences (Stage 1 letter) are over 1,800 minutes of missed instruction! These five absences also equal almost 3% of the school year missed.
We are here to support you in your child's attendance, so please reach out with any needs or questions.
Zones of Regulation
This year in Character Education, students have learned about Zones of Regulation, a valuable framework designed to help children develop emotional awareness and self-regulation skills. Self-regulation is defined as "the capacity to manage one’s thoughts, feelings, and actions in adaptive and flexible ways across a range of contexts." A person who can self-regulate can remain calm and organized in a stressful situation, cheer themselves up after a disappointment, know when they are experiencing sensory overload and make adjustments, and understand when it is appropriate to cheer and shout, and when you should be quiet. All of these are skills that we are teaching our students through the use of Zones of Regulation.
The Zones categorize emotions into four color-coded zones – blue, green, yellow, and red – each representing a different level of emotion. By familiarizing your child with these zones, they can better understand and manage their feelings.
At home, you can support this learning by creating a safe and open environment for your child to express their emotions. Encourage them to identify the zone they are in and discuss strategies to move to the green zone, where optimal learning and social interactions occur. Empathize with your child and validate what they are feeling. You can also help them calm down using a strategy. Incorporating activities like deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, and providing a quiet space for self-reflection can be helpful tools in promoting emotional regulation.
By working together, we can empower our children with the skills they need for emotional well-being. Please reach out if you have specific questions or would like support/strategies at home for your child(ren).
