Feb. Week 4: Ocean Currents
Observation: Oceans are HUGE and the water is moving all the time.
Question: What happens when warm and cold water meet?
Materials: (You’ll need an adult for this one!)
4 c. Hot, Boiling Water
Cold, Ice Water
Food Coloring (Red & Blue)
Ocean animals
Large Bowl or 9x13 Disposable Tin
Investigation:
Fill the baking dish ⅓ full of cold water. Add 1 to 1 ½ c. of ice & add a few drops of blue food coloring 1 at a time (it should be very light blue) and allow the ice to melt.
As the ice is melting, boil 4 c. of water on the stove and add red food coloring - make this color darker than the blue.
Place the ocean animals or land replicas in the cold water tin.
When both sets of water and dye are ready, carefully pour the boiling water into the corner of the tin pan.
As the hot water moves faster through the cold water, you will see currents straighter lines and swirls (Eddies) begin to form. The faster, hotter (red water) demonstrates the currents in the ocean like the East Australian Current (Finding Nemo).
Results:
Take a picture of your experiment and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflect:
Note how the water moves around the pieces in the tin and how this might affect the water currents when you go to the beach and the ocean.
