A Message from Miss Buchko
Dear MacArthur Families,
A huge thank you goes out to Firefighter Dale Holsti for providing all of our Kindergartners and First Graders with a presentation on fire safety. Firefighter Dale did an amazing job explaining fire safety to our students and he encouraged each of our students to go home and create a fire safety plan with their families. One of the key points Firefighter Dale made was that every family needs an exit plan and meeting place once out of the house. Sparky, the firedog, made a special surprise appearance and our students loved seeing him.
I would like to take this moment to thank all of our parents in advance for signing up for the Parent/Teacher conferences, which take place on Thursday, October 26th. Yesterday, all classroom teachers sent out a PowerSchool message for parents to sign-up for a 15-minute conference. This may seem like a brief meeting, but it can be so powerful. A parent-teacher conference helps to communicate areas your child's excelling in and to foster some specific ideas of how to improve upon your child's performance in school.
All of our K-5 students have been meeting with their classroom teachers setting goals based upon their most recent NWEA assessments. Goals drive much of what we do as adults every day. But students too often rely on us to determine goals for them. Did you know that there is strong evidence that goal setting has a strong influence on learning, a .50 effect size (Hattie, 2012)? The average effect size is 0.4, which represents a year's growth per year of schooling for a student. Effect size---the impact that a particular strategy, technique, circumstance or issue has on student learning. I like to refer to effect size as the biggest bang for our buck. What strategy or technique is going to have the biggest, most positive impact on our students' learning. Students setting goals is one area that definitely has a high effect size.
As we are preparing for Parent/Teacher conferences, another extremely high effect size is the teacher-student interaction. The teacher-student interaction has a .72 effect size on student accomplishment. When your child comes home and shares how they love their teacher(s), as a parent you know that can make all the difference in your child's school year. Well, now you have data to support your thinking. I know that as the principal of MacArthur I am blessed to work with amazing educators who truly go above and beyond for our students to help them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Have a Great Weekend,
Marian Buchko

Semester Grades
Last year, our elementary schools joined our middle and high schools in reporting grades at the end of each semester. Previously, elementary report cards were finalized each nine weeks. We have shifted to reporting at the end of each semester so that students have a longer time to demonstrate what they know and can do. Our focus is on mastery learning and supporting a growth mindset in our learners.
The end of the first 9 weeks is Friday, October 13, 2023. While parents are always able to view students’ progress in our Buzz Learning Management System, this checkpoint at the end of the 9 weeks is a great time to check in on how your child is doing. There will still be plenty of time to ask for help if needed, complete work, and bring grades up before the end of the semester when grades are finalized. If you have not yet verified your email address in Buzz, this is an important step to ensure that you are receiving all relevant alerts and information about your child’s progress. Instructions for accessing Buzz are linked here.
Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher should you have any questions about their progress or to learn more about how you can partner with us to support your child’s academic development.
We look forward to welcoming you to Parent Teacher Conferences in late October. During Parent Teacher Conferences, we encourage a collaborative dialogue that highlights how your student is transitioning throughout the first semester. We look forward to addressing questions parents/caregivers have, sharing relevant information (engagement, strengths, NWEA, classwork, socialization, areas for growth), and establishing on-going means for communication.

Parents/Guardians,
Thank you to everyone who participated in College and Career Week! It is never too early to start thinking about the future. Looking ahead, October is Bully Prevention Month. Children and adults all around the globe will be wearing blue to show their support! I strongly encourage you to have a conversation with your child about preventing bullying, how to stop it, and the harmful effects of it. It is also very important that we distinguish the difference between something rude, mean, and what is truly bullying. Children often feel that if they are not the person being bullied then they should not have to stand up or say anything. Being a bystander means you witness bullying and sit back and do nothing to change the situation or help. More than half of bullying situations (57 percent) stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied. This is huge! If we continue to educate our children on not being a bystander and standing up to bullying we can make a huge difference.
Bully Prevention Education for Students
Indiana Legislature requires that each public school shall provide age-appropriate, research-based instruction as provided under IC 5-2-10.1-12(d) focusing on bullying prevention for all students in grades 1 through 12. Crown Point elementary students will receive age-appropriate, research-based instruction using the Second Steps Bully Prevention Unit by October 15th. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to contact Ms. Bellamy with questions at abellamy@cps.k12.in.us .
