PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā Koutou Katoa
This week is the last week of Term 3. It is very important that staff and students get time during these holidays to have a rest. It is also a time for Year 9 to 13 to be thinking about their goals for Term 4. Year 9 and 10 will have end of year examinations in the hall week 5 and 6 of Term 4. These will help determine class placements for 2022 and awards for junior prize giving. Senior students will have their prize giving week 4 and then most will begin their study leave in preparation for external examinations starting the 22nd November.
Wairoa College staff and students would also like to wish our Year 7 and 8 rugby players who are competing in the Wakely Shield or Ross Shield tournaments during these holidays all the best. I know you have worked very hard with up to four training sessions per week. Last Saturday the students received their caps for Ross Shield. These were presented by Mayor Craig Little.
Thank you to those students who have returned their devices so we can continue our learning programmes in school. We would appreciate that if your child has not returned their device they do so as soon as possible. As we have the signed forms for user agreements already, if we did go into lockdown we would be able to issue devices swiftly to those students that had one in this last lockdown.
Subject selections have been taking place for some year levels. It is important that students have a conversation at home to discuss their options. It is even more important that students keep their options open so they do not close off potential pathways. Some students will need to be interviewed a few times in this process before their subjects are confirmed for 2022.
I would like to wish all staff, students and whanau a good break.

Year 7 & 8 Adrenaline Camps
Service Academy Adventure Challenge
Wairoa College Services Academy participated in the five day Adventure Challenge course held in Rotorua from 20 - 24 September 2021. What an amazing experience had by all students including Military, Directors and support staff. A big thank you to the Okataina Outdoor Education Camp situated on the outskirts of town which supported our programme by accommodating all Services Academies from Central Region.
On arrival to the camp site, everyone was required to complete a Covid 19 screening process answering a series of questions and recording body temperatures. Social distancing was enforced to maintain Level Two guidelines.
Starting with the first activity on Tuesday, we prepared our day packs and completed a 18 kilometre tramp climbing to an elevation of approximately 625 meters above sea level. This activity tested ones fitness and endurance level. The following day we started with a three hour mountain bike ride in Whakarewarewa forest exploring a few trail rides for different skill levels. In the afternoon we exchanged our bikes for paddles as we ventured into the Kaituna river to experience an hour full of excitement and adrenalin rush with white water rafting. Negotiating rapids and a seven metre water fall was such an awesome experience. The following day, we suited up in PT kit and competed in the Tough Guy, Tough Girl Challenge at Lakes Ranch. Running on farmland covering a lot of ground we encountered different obstacles from creeks, tunnels, spider web, barb wire, hurdles and many more. On departure day (Friday) we all headed to Rotorua Skyline to take a ride in the gondolas and the luge rides. A fitting way to cap off a fun filled week.
This was our last event for 2021. For those students who will be Year 12 or 13 next year, I challenge you to experience what the Services Academy has to offer.
