KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Our campus was delightfully busy this week with Read Across America and Exceptional Children’s Weeks, the March All Pro Dads meeting and the Yes I Can celebration rounded out the week. Not even rainy days could stop the joy felt from the positive energy here.
I know that the morning carpool run can feel stressful and rushed, but it’s important that drivers follow the traffic rules. We’ve fielded communication regarding the speed that drivers are going while on campus as well as drivers not stopping at stop signs during the morning drop off. We have an officer that is often at the post near the Northwood sign, but the concerning intersection is the three way stop just before entering campus. Cars should come to a complete stop and not zip or roll through that intersection. Thank you for your help in keeping our Explorers safe.
Parent Survey Update: Families have until next Friday the 15th to participate in the Annual School Perception Survey. Our current parent participation is only 15%. Our goal is 50%, we’re lucky there’s still time.
Our School Governance Council is still open for parent candidate declarations. If interested, there is additional information below. The deadline to submit is Friday, March 29th.
Have a wonderful extended weekend!
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
YES, I CAN AWARDS
We had a wonderful time celebrating exceptional children's week this week. We got to celebrate the different ways each of us are unique and show off our unique talents. We ended the week with celebrating our eight Yes, I Can nominees. This is a time where we celebrate all of our students who have made immense progress in academics, as well as other areas of their school experience. At the end of the celebration, our school nominates one representative who exemplified the Yes, I Can attitude to be recognized at the County Level.
The Yes, I Can award winner for the 2023-2024 school year is Cambe Westry. We are so proud of Cambe and all of our nominees!
FEBRUARY PBIS CELEBRATION
We love celebrating our students' positive behaviors here at Northwood. Last Friday, all grade levels enjoyed celebrating their good choices and all their hard-earned gold slips for the month of February. This time the students had fun playing Minute to Win It games. Not only was this a celebration but also a chance for the students to learn how to work together towards a goal and celebrate each other's accomplishments.
Students rotated through stations where they faced different challenges they had to complete in one minute. The lower grades' favorite challenge was the "Windy Pom-Poms Race". The goal was to get their entire teams' pom-poms across the finish line in a minute by blowing the pom-poms with a straw to make them move. The upper grades loved "The Magician Challenge" where they had to set up plastic cups with pieces of card stock in between and then had to yank the cards out, causing the cups to fall into a tower but not fall over.
GET READY FOR GEORGIA MILESTONES
What can I do to help my child prepare?
Be certain your child gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast.
Be certain your student is at school on time, so they are not worried about being late.
Remind students that cell phones and smart watches will be collected and stored in the secure testing room during test administration times. It’s best for students to leave them at home if possible.
Please have students bring their fully charged device every day.
Get information and practice using this link: Georgia Milestones Resources (gadoe.org)
Experience the online testing session. See below for more details, and use this link: www.gaexperienceonline.com
What happens if my child is absent?
- There will be rolling make-ups throughout the testing window. Please do not send your child in if they are sick.
Can visitors be in the building?
- During GMAS testing, we will not be allowing visitors in the building before 11:30 am; and there will also be no lunch visitors these days.
Georgia Experience Online
Georgia Experience Online is a practice site that can be used for students to learn more about the structure and content of the Georgia Milestones Assessment, experience online testing, and practice using online testing tools. Parents are welcome to explore this site and use to practice with your child.
Please note that the EOG Test Practice site will have ELA and Math questions while the EOG Study Guide for Students and Parents only focuses on Math and Science (5th grade only).
Below you will find an attachment with directions and the link to access the site. Please contact your child’s teacher or our CST, Danielle Evangelista if you have any questions.

CLUSTER PROGRAM NEWS
SHOE US THE LOVE!
Northwood Elementary PTA presents, Shoe Us the Love! This year we set multiple goals to contribute additional efforts toward sustainability as well as caring and sharing. Our Caring and Sharing Chair, Kim Maloney, along with our VP4, Jennifer Porter, researched, scheduled and developed a plan to achieve both goals by way of our shoe drive.
Beginning March 18th, bring gently worn, used, or new shoes to our collection area at Northwood in the front lobby. Not only will this project increase donations for our Northwood Explorers and staff, but it will also support underdeveloped countries with an everyday need, shoes. But wait, that's not all! Reusing the shoes also keeps them out of a landfill thus supporting our very own Earth! We look forward to all the excitement this project is going to bring and as always thank you for your continued support!
