Free Summer Fun with Your Children!

The first few weeks of summer break are usually a nice respite from the routine children follow during the school year. But as parents, we know it’s only a matter of time before we hear those dreaded words, “Mom/Dad, I’m bored. . .” It would be nice if those feelings don’t surface until at least July! If you are looking for some unique games to play with your children, try out some of the following ideas to have a fun and relaxing time:

Coin adventure – Take a walk but give it a little twist. Flip a coin at every corner to determine if you’ll turn right (heads) or left (tails). What a way to giggle!
Test drive on the slide – Place a bucket at the end of the slide. Test drive toy cars to see if they will roll into the bucket.
Obstacle course – walk along a garden hose, crawl under lawn chairs, run around the sprinkler without getting wet, etc.
Tent time – Use a plastic tarp or a large blanket over a clothesline to create a tent. Provide a picnic and a board game and enjoy the shade!
Scavenger Hunt – Make two lists of common household and yard objects you know you have. Pre-readers will need pictures instead of words on the list. Anything can be on the list: a dandelion, rock, worm, straw, cotton ball, rollerblade, ball, roly-poly bug, etc. Give each child/team a list and a bag to hold the items. The winner is the first team to collect all items on the list.
Get active! – Join your children as they jump rope, teaching them some of the jumping rhymes you knew as a child. Shoot hoops to see who can make the craziest shot. Play a game of hide and seek outdoors using squirt guns. Take a bike ride together and count how many of a certain object (such as dogs, yellow flowers, lawn chairs, etc.) you see along the way.
