Hello McPherson Families,

This week, McPherson is participating in "Start with Hello" week! We will have fun activities each day and students may wear free dress in all green on Wednesday to demonstrate unity and inclusivity for all. Please review the newsletter for information about opting in to School Messenger text messages, School Site Council nominations, the PTSA Reflections program, a Trunk Or Treat planning meeting, and other important upcoming dates.

McPherson is participating in Start with Hello Week on September 16 – 20. During Start with Hello Week we will engage in school wide activities and opportunities that encourage everyone to build a welcoming school culture. Please look at the schedule below, as well as the attachment for more information about our activities during this week.

Monday, September 16 – Hello Day! Greet people by their name and say HELLO!

Tuesday, September 17 – Post-It if it’s Positive Day! Leave a positive message for someone on a Post-It Note in class.

Wednesday, September 18 – Wear Green Day! Wear Green to promote Unity and Inclusivity.

Thursday, September 19 – Mix it Up Day! Play with someone you do not usually play with and make a new friend.

Friday, September 20 – Random Acts of Kindness Day! Do something kind for someone at school and encourage others to do the same.

Would you like to be a member of McPherson’s School Site Council? School Site Council consists of a group of parents and staff members that give input on plans for the school and monitor the categorical funding for the school. We are in need of 4 parent representatives for SSC to serve a two year term. Once volunteers/nominations are taken, the candidates will be voted on by our parent community. Please fill out the linked Google Form if you are interested in being a parent representative on the School Site Council by Tuesday, September 17. SSC meets virtually once a month on Mondays from 3:00pm to 3:45 pm. The first meeting will be on September 30.

Is your student interested in art, music, dance, writing, producing film or taking photos? Encourage your child to showcase their talents by participating in the National PTA Reflections program. California State PTA and its members, families, and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education. This year’s theme is “Accepting Imperfection.” There are opportunities for awards and fun prizes just for participating!

Our first Fall school Flag assembly will be on Wednesday, September 25th. Each grade level will be recognizing one student each month as "Meteor of the Month". All parents are welcome to attend. If your student is receiving an award, you will be notified via email. The Flag assembly is immediately followed by a Principal's Coffee and PTSA meeting. A virtual link will also be sent out for the Principal's Coffee and PTSA meeting.

Family Dinner Night - Chipotle Mexican Grill on September 25 - 4:00pm to 8:00pm

Come into the Chipotle at 3440 E Chapman Ave in Orange on Wednesday, September 25 between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Bring the attached flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re

supporting the cause to make sure that 25% of the proceeds will be donated to McPherson Magnet School.

Parent-teacher conferences for elementary classes are October 7 - October 11. Teachers will send out their schedules directly to parents to fill in a time for their conference. Elementary students will be on a minimum day schedule Monday - Friday, 10/7-10/11. Middle school students are on a regular schedule this week.

We are excited to offer math tutoring BEFORE school for all middle school students on Thursdays and Fridays (starting September 5). This is a great opportunity for students to get extra help with math assignments, prepare for tests, or simply improve their math skills. No sign-up necessary. These are drop in tutoring sessions.

*It is helpful if students have two or three homework questions identified to review or ask questions about during tutoring.

When: Every Thursday & Friday morning from 7:15am to 8:00am (Starting September 5)

Who: Any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student

At McPherson, we value a partnership with parents and families and we want you to take an active role in your child's education. We do have an expectation that every family will contribute ten hours of volunteer time every year. There are many ways to volunteer throughout the year but if you intend to volunteer on campus during the year (classroom help, parties, field trips, etc) we must have you complete OUSD's volunteer application. You can complete this now and it will be good for the entire school year. The majority of our campus volunteers will be working 5 hours or less on campus so you will only need to complete the requirements listed under #1 and #2 on the links below. Please call the office if you have any questions regarding the volunteer application process.
